One of my all time favorite directors. In order of preference:

    Railroaded!
    T-Men
    Raw Deal
    He Walked By Night
    Reign Of Terror
    Side Street
    Strange Impersonation

Still desperately need to see The Tall Target.

T-Men and Raw Deal are both fantastic noirs and I was lucky to see T-Men in a cinema! I've still gotta open my DVD copy of Winchester73 though! Mann made some great hard-boiled cinema in his day.

Absolutely! Of the films I have seen, I would have to say that Reign Of Terror was the most pleasant surprise for me. I wasn't expecting much but boy did I get it and then some.

Richard Basehart is very good as the villain in Reign of Terror.

    Re: Anthony Mann Report Card

VCI's new release of REIGN OF TERROR (double-billed with THE AMAZING MR. X) seems to be a significant upgrade in quality over the Alpha & other PD versions. I'm not entirely certain that the screencaps below are from this DVD (and I blush that I'm not properly citing the original source), but they look nice. Anybody got this yet & care to comment on the quality?

I thought the film had some trademark Mann touches to be honest. Frequent Mann cinematographer John Alton was not used on this film but some of the scenes involving light and shadow had that Mann touch I thought as did some of the close-ups which were a Mann trait. Granted, I haven't seen the film in years and it was part soap opera with a kind of cop out ending but it was enjoyable enough with some Noir touches as well.

Those REIGN OF TERROR caps do appear to be a nice upgrade from the Alpha disc. That is one seriously good period piece Noir IMHO.

I'm a huge Mann fan and am glad to hear there is a better quality version of this one out. Haven't seen it in years... I'll hunt this one down. Thanks for the tout.*

Cave, Steve R.: I think they come from the VCI. Not sure -- I was looking for a confirmation review of the disc myself. It's under ten bucks from amazon marketplace sellers (deepdiscount!), so I should probably just jump on it.

Strategic Air Command-Decent Mann/Stewart film which I read was inspired by Ted Williams. Some good moments but could have been better.

Devil's Doorway-Decent Mann western with a strong climatic confrontation scene and a pretty good tragic ending.

Men in War-One of my favorite Mann films that reminds me of the korean war movies of Samuel Fuller. Both Robert Ryan and Aldo Ray(as the Gene evans type character) are great in it, and Robert Keith gives a good performance as well.
