Which of these four have had the most consistent career? For me its hard to say as each has had their share of ups and downs. Maybe De Niro until the last few years.

I went for Nicholson. De Niro's been in some God-awful films lately, Pacinio's had a pretty decent run and Hoffman, well he's struggled as well. Nicholson may have been in his prime during the 70s but I did enjoy his performances in The Pledge and About Schmidt so he pipped it. In their day though they were all superb actors who starred in some fantastic films.

    Tough one

I'm not particularly fond of Nicholson, as I feel there's too much of a schtick to his oily and wild man Jack personas, but I can't recall seeing him be truly awful.

I like Pacino and De Niro better, but both have been in some real dreck more recently.

Hoffman kind of went off my radar, though his work in Lenny, Straw Dogs, Midnight Cowboy etc is hard to ignore.

In the end I think I'd go for De Niro, because with Raging Bull I think he pushed the method further than any of the others physically.

    Re: De Niro/Hoffman/Nicholson/Pacino

I've always like Shoutin' Big Al the best. Probably the most consistent and the one who I've actually found entertaining in recent years.

De Niro was one of the best, but I find the quality in his career extremely erratic come the end of the 80s. Great to God Awful so often. Nicholson is the same way, except he started the erratic trend a lot earlier than De Niro did. A movie announcing either one of their names these days doesn't fill me with optimism. Hoffman I was never a huge fan of, meaning he was never a draw for me, but he's usually pretty good. I think all of them had the ability to be awesome in their younger days, and were on many occasion, but as they got older they lost what originally attracted me to them in the first place.
    i don't know butchie instead.

Pacino all the way. As a performer, he's aged well. Sure, he descends into a caricature of himself at times (SCENT OF A WOMAN, anyone?), but he can still be mesmerizing. I love him when he's intense, on the edge, where he's gotta be

As much as I love many of De Niro's performances (e.g. Johnny Boy in MEAN STREETS), he seems to be slacking as of late, as if he's taking a well-earned break. I don't recall seen a De Niro movie in a theatre since CASINO.
