Movies set in girls' boarding schools (recommendations)

As a young lad, I always wanted to attend an all-girls boarding school, but there was always one major obstacle (some would call it a minor obstacle) standing in my way. I'm actually not the least bit obsessed with real-life girls' boarding schools anymore, but I still love the CINEMATIC ones where the girls all look to be about 20 and apparently they get expelled if they DON'T look sexy as hell in a school uniform.

This is not really some sex fetish though. I do like some softcore porn films set in boarding schools ("Vanessa", "Felicity") and some sex comedies ("Private School", "Boarding School"), but I also like straight dramas ("Picnic at Hanging Rock", "Lost and Delerious"), horror movies ("The House that Screamed", "Phenomenon"), and more innocent comedies (the British "St. Trinian's" films) even though many of them don't have shower scenes or hot girl-on-girl action (not that there's anything wrong with those things either).

Anyway, I doubt anyone will ever write a book on this subject, but I'd be up for hearing any recommendations my fellow cinephiles have. . .

I'm not sure about you but I lump them in with WIP films...well the trashier ones anyway & of that one of my all time favorites is Reform School Girls. I would also lump in Nunsploitation films come to think of it as they often entertain the same ideals.

    Lust For A Vampire
    Heavenly Creatures
    Don't Deliver Us From Evil

Other than Lust For A Vampire the other two are not set solely, but of course play an integral role...

The Magdalene Sisters (2002) That's a rough one to take, more of a religious reform school.

Re: Movies set in girls' boarding schools (recommendations)

Watched one at work last week that had totally flown under my radar: called ALL I WANNA DO in the US, and variously STRIKE! and THE HAIRY BIRD in foreign territories. It's a PG-13 comedy set in the 60s with Kirsten Dunst and Heather Matarazzo about a group of girls forming a friendship at an old girls' academy and conspiring to keep the school from going co-ed. Really surprised me what a sweet, funny, and entertaining film this was, and given some of the cast members, I was really surprised I hadn't heard of it. The Weinsteins did one of their typical chop-'n'-dumps on it, cutting a few lines of innuendo to get it down to a PG-13, retitling it, dumping it in a few New York theaters for a week or two, and then dumping it to video after. Yet it's a really sweet, funny comedy with a good sense of camaraderie between the girls, and it subverts a number of the classic girls-school cliches, too boot (the girls finding something to admire in single-sex education and the opportunities it affords them as women in the 60s is an interesting and mature angle). The film was written and directed by a woman, and is clearly reflective in its attention to detail of her experiences as a girl in the same milieu, so if you like girls' school movies, I think you'll probably find a lot to like. It's got hijinks, for sure, but also a lot of heart.

You probably have these already but..

    Whispering Corridors 1998 Korea
    Memento Mori 1999
    Wishing Stairs 2003
    Voice 2005
Blood Pledge 2008 Basically the Whispering Corridors series, they take place in all girl schools but only Wishing stairs is set in an actual boarding school.

My Bloody Roomates Korea 2006 Kind of a detention/remedial institution for girls who have failed at school.

Gurozuka (Japan) 2006-Female film students venture out to a remote cabin for school project, slasher antics ensue. Neat little film
very cute actresses and some decent slasher action. Synapse has nice edition.

I forgot about "Flossie" (the scenes where the title character ends up in a girls' boarding school for really, really sexy overaged orphans) and "Even the Wind is Afraid", which I understand they recently re-made with Mexican actress Martha Higuereda (who was in another recent girls' school movie "Ninas Mal" aka "Charm School"). And I totally forgot about all the Asian ones--"My Bloody Roomates" looks especially interesting.

The most recent ones I've seen are "Tanner Hall" (with Rooney "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Mara), "Cracks" (with Eva Green and Juno Temple), and "The Moth Diaries" (a horror movie by Mary "American Psycho" Harron loosely based on the same Sheridan LeFanu short story as "Lust for a Vampire"). I like the older ones better though--I'll have to check out "Our Time". . .

Oh, and wasn't JENNIFER (1978) set in a girl's boarding school too? Been a while since I've seen it...

Pretty Smart (1987) - This used to be on cable constantly and I would pass over it all the time but never sat through it. No DVD release as of yet it seems.
