Best dvds of John Woo's asian movies

I've been on an action kick lately and i want to get the asian "heroic bloodshed" movies John Woo made ( mainly BITH, The Killer and Hard Boiled ) and i've read the the Dragon Dynasty releases are shit and the only other english friendly edition is a 3 disc UK set which contain BITH, The Killer and Once A Thief. Can anybody guide me on which release to buy ???
Also, i'd appreciate a recommendation or two on some good asian action movies with good dvd releases cause i'm basically clueless when it comes to asian cinema.

    A Better Tomorrow I & II
    Hard Boiled
    The Killer
    Bullet in the Head
Hard Target - the JCVD one he first did in the US is quite good, too. Don't go nuts looking for an "uncut"one. The regular release is fine.
Face Off - is also an incredible film.
Red Cliff - More of an epic though it has some wonderful action sequences, particularly a siege of a castle and an attack on ships at sea.

are all fantastic films. I have some Anchor Bays and a bunch
of imports. These are such good films. THe DVDs were such a
big improvement (PQ) over the VHS that I had, so I am more forgiving
on the quality. Some of the subtitle translations can drop the ball.

    Others to seek out
Ringo Lam - Full Contact (amazing!!), City on Fire, Prison on Fire I & II, Burning Paradise
    Beast Cops
    Tiger Cafge
    Flashpoint
    Iron Monkey
Johnnie To has a lot of good crime ones - Election,Exiled , PTU, his first Full Time Killer is wonderful
I'm a big fan of all the Jet Li's - Fist of Legend, Tai Chi Master, Once Upon a Time in China I & II

    There are tons out there
Ong Bak is killer! Jaw dropping action scenes(aka Muay Thai Warrior)

    Ryuhei Kitamura
Versus is quite a lot of fun, bucketloads of bloodshed, gun,s swords, gangsters, zombies
Azumi is a favorite of mine, too

Thanks Steve. Thats a good list. I've been wanting to see Full Contact since i first heard CYF plays a baddie and Ringo Lam's awesome in my book, but i remember reading that the US dvd quality is shit and they've changed some of the music. Is that true ??

I wouldn't say the Dragon Dynasty versions of The Killer or Hard Boiled are shit, they aren't perfect but neither is any other DVD release of these two great films. AFAIK, they are uncut, correct aspect ratio, lots of extras, Eng and Canto language option-the subs(or dub titles) are what most people seem to complain about. I never owned either of these on VHS or saw them in theatres so I honestly don't have anything to compare the subs to. They make sense and I they're close enough for me. As far as Bullet in the Head, I got the Reg 3 Fortune Star 2 disc version. It is a really solid release 3 language options, the most complete version available, you can play previously cut scenes via 'seemless' branching, alternate ending, special features etc.etc. DDD House has it, I believe.

You're right, when i read some reviews yesterday, the complains where about the BR disc, not the dvd, and since i dont care about Blurays, i'm going to get those 2 movies from DD. Lots of good extras too. Also, what does dubtitles mean ? Like they subtitle the english language dub and not the original cantonese soundtrack ???

It means that instead of translating the original language for the subtitles, they simply take the
script for the dubbing session (dub track) and use that to make the subtitles that go with the foreign language track.

Yeah, it would basically mean a translation of the English dub. If you dig around on different forums you can find reviews and discussions -I think Hard Boiled is the one with dubtitles but I got my wife to double check (cause she speaks decent Cantonese) and she said the subs translated the Canto pretty closely .

Even though the uncut release is only a couple of minutes difference, I enjoy it more. Each time someone is killed, they get about 10 more bullets pumped into them than in the rated R cut. Makes me laugh every time.

The horrible subtitle translation ruined this release for me.

I remember hearing about the DVD that the picture is 'stretched' and the transfer isn't that good, at least that's what I remember when the reviews first appeared. Some of the caps looked awful, so that's why I never picked it up.
