    Huck Walker's ALL-AMERICAN HUSTLER (197?) - what was it?

In my ongoing quest to get a print of every depressing XXX hooker drama, I finally found a decent print of Huck Walker's sleazy and depressing curio, known as ALL-AMERICAN HUSTLER.

The print was a pleasant revelation from the godawful (and cut) SWV tape which is mist notably missing some exposition footage at the beginning of the film and most of the ending the final sequence of our heroine's suicide. It doesn't brighten up the really dark opening sex scene but at least it proves that the film wasn't the awful looking maroon mess the SWV transfer yielded.

Now, as to the film itself, it's a strange patchwork of who knows what. Likely shot soft and spiced up with (very well matched, so possibly shot at the same time) XXX inserts, a lot of it like like a home movie; zoom happy hand held cinematography, awkward framing and cuts, etc. abound. The cast is anonymous except for a surprise appearance from Michael Pataki who, despite his penchant for odd films, seems out of place in a movie this dirt cheap and sleazy.
The sex scenes, whether originally intended as XXX or not, are made up of sweaty wide shots and grotesque extreme close-ups of penetration. Thankfully, none of it appears to have been intended to be even remotely arousing.

Clocking in at just over an in length (so fitting comfortably along side other interesting 60 min hooker dramas like LITTLE ANGEL PUSS and MOMMA'S LITTLE GIRL), HUSTLER manages to create a genuine sense of realism. It's not 'artsy' in the least. It's going for consistent discomfort and it achieves its goals. The cast is pretty good, overall.

So, this finally brings me to my questions: does anyone have ANY info about this film, its director, its release history, etc? I doubt it got a lot of play, but it was blown up to 35mm so some mid-range distributor must have handled it at some point. Eastman stock date code on my print says 1978 but the film looks at least a few years older. Early 70's probably. Definitely not '78.
Anyone ever see an ad for this? Anything?

First I've ever heard of it, and I love "depressing XXX hooker dramas". You say SWV had a vhs for sale at one point? What did they use for a cover?

All-American Hustler is one of the twelve feature films in Alpha Blue Archives' The Roughies: Brute Lust four-disc DVD box set.

Sheldon, have you seen the ABA release? I'd be very curious to know if they just ripped off the SWV version or they actually found their own print? The 65 min running time they list is accurate compared to my print. SWV's version runs 56:30...

An admat from April 1, 1973 appears in the L.A. Times archives, but that's a subscription site with a pay-per-view minimum of $3.95.

I don't know if this lengthy URL will work here or not; http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/latimes/...e&pqatl=google

    Thanks Sheldon!

I actually just got a print of A DAY IN THE LIFE as well. It's pretty dull and virtually plot free. Just 70 min of sex vignettes.

So, based on the dates of the ads that you and Paul found, it looks like this film was an early '73 (maybe late '72!) production.

Seems about right. This definitely has a "very early days" vibe to it, when it didn't matter what the film was about, as long as there was XXX in it.

Robin, they still offer it. It's Dragon Art Double Feature 28, with LOVE IN THE RAIN. Just a couple of ladies on the cover. I'm about to back this DVD-R up. If you want me to make you a copy too, that'd be no problem.
