Re: Upcoming CODE RED Release Schedule

I have no problem with the "Grindhouse Cut" transfer of THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE DARK. The color and detail are just fine. However I agree with Luis that the film itself is a chore. I've watched about a dozen Naschy films over the past year and loved every one of them until PEOPLE. Instead of zombies, werewolves or vampires the menace in PEOPLE is basically a small band of blind old people with canes. If you were to miss the setup you'd probably assume that the Country Kitchen Buffet stopped honoring the senior citizen discount and this was the aftermath. The sleaze, gore and skin factor is quite low as well. That said, I did like Naschy's character.

I'd probably be pretty bummed that I had wasted $40 if I hadn't been blown away by THE BABYSITTER. I have seen the trailer several times and was never taken by it. The positive buzz it receives online was my only reason for being interested. It lived up to the hype and the transfer is stunning. It's far more sleazier and interesting than I expected. Its up there as one of my favorite Crown films.

Actually its more than 10 seconds. The movie got an X rating, they edited the gore, and then still got an X, so they shaved of 10 more seconds.

And who cares?!? Maybe all of us who have seen the uncut version and is disappointed it wasnt put back in using seamless branching? (Will still get the disc though)

Maybe ALL movies that was shown theatrically in the US in a censored versions should be released PG-13/R-rated on DVD/BD instead of Uncut/Unrated. I mean, who would care?

But it's an american label releasing an american movie and as it was shown here, so this is irrelevent. Just ask to an european label to purchase the movie rights to get the restore european cut of it...

Except you forgot one huge difference : this release is approved by the director so it isn't a question of studio or MPAA.

Oh well, guess Im the only one here being disappointed about this
Though, as I said, Ill still get the disc, as I want to see that new 35mm transfer in its glory.

I can always rip the disc and make my own uncut edit by inserting the cut footage

As I have never seen it with those extra cut it's hard to be disapointed.

For us it's a restored edition and like the scene are there as extra materials we will see them anyway, so everyone is a winner kind of

There's nothing 'seamless' about cutting from a widescreen, HD transfer to a washed out, full screen video source. It would stick out like a sore thumb. The edited footage is supposedly included in the extras. That's fine by me and preferable to jarring image quality transitions.

I certainly don't mind the missing footage because correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the deleted scenes all that accumulates what makes up the uncut version? Either way, this movie looks like its going to be blast!

Yes, but once again, they could have used BRANCHING, so you could have had a CHOISE between seeing it with the footage put back in or seeing it without them, just like Lionsgate did with "My Bloody Valentine", or any other DVD with both versions on it.

    End of rant from me

People are free to critique Code Red, just as they are free to critique any other company. I just want to make that clear.

    Absolutely.
I'm definitely not a blind defender of any company, including CR.

Nor am I, though I find it hard to fault Criterion, for example. Still if they issue a crap product, I'd call them out on it. We don't need to worry about stifling our right to express our opinions on a company's product.

Criterion's Monsters And Madmen set was a let down, using 4:3 cropped masters of widescreen films.

Just to be OT for a second lol

Criterion has let me down a lot. Their recent Robert Downey Sr. set was dreadful. Poor transfers of most of the films (granted, the prints were in lousy shape to begin with, but the HD transfers also looked awful).

Also, their Czech New Wave set was sourced from mostly interlaced transfers and looked rough in spots.

I saw the movie prior to its release, then saw the R-rated version and the difference was only a few seconds. Perhaps what I saw the first time was already after the FIRST pass by the MPAA. Anyway, I would be disappointed about the DVD being the cut version if I thought the movie was worth a damn. Instead, I will have to just be "disappointed in principle."
