Peter Jackson's early films being restored for Blu-Ray

I caught the very end of Peter Jackson's Reel Time on Cinemagic interview and he said that he is currently restoring his early films for Blu-Ray releases. He didn't drop titles or potential release dates, but I imagine he was talking about his first 3 films. I can't wait for MEET THE FEEBLES in 1080p (especially since it has never had a decent dvd release).

MEET THE FEEBLES would be great, as would HEAVENLY CREATURES (his masterpiece) and DEAD ALIVE. Honestly, I think I'd buy just about anything Jackson made. I already have the KING KONG BD. My last pick would probably be THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, but I'd still get those eventually.

I'd go for HEAVENLY CREATURES. The rest . . . eh. I can live with standard def. (And I still haven't seen KONG. For some reason it just doesn't register as something I want to see).

It's about time. I don't personally need a Blu-Ray of Heavenly Creatures, but I could certainly use a nice-looking version of Brain Dead.

Brain-dead would be fantastic on blu ray as would Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles, but uncut Brain Dead would be the one i would most look forward too. Hopefully these will come with commentaries from Peter Jackson

I'm especially dying to see some behind-the-scene/making-of footage for Braindead... A Braindead Blu-ray would be great but I really hope these editions won't be barebones like the dvd editions...

Hopefully he'll remaster the uncut version of Braindead instead of the shorter US cut. From what I remember Jackson prefers the shorter edit with some of the best jokes cut out along with a lot of great violent gags.

As I only have the old uncut Danish video release I didn't even know there was a shorter US cut. I never understood the daft retitling and this just sounds too weird. How much shorter is it?

EDIT: I've just checked Dvdcompare.net and how weird is this? The Scandinavian DVD versions are "Missing the opening sequence with the queen" Well, like I said the VHS is uncut.

The US version runs 2.5 min shorter than the Kiwi version.

DVD compare says 2.5 minutes. I don't know if that's including the intro with the Queen.
I know there's a conversation with Lionel and his mom that's trimmed and the taxidermist is trimmed, too. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

These probably will have special features (I've known that they were/are working on Special Editions of the early films, but I didn't know that they were going to have Blu-Ray releases).

Jack, Braindead was retitled to Dead Alive because there was another movie called Brain Dead released 2 years earlier and I think the distributor wanted to avoid any confusion.

Re: Peter Jackson's early films being restored for Blu-Ray

Yeah I remember reading a piece in (the old Aussie film mag) Fatal Visions about it, and from memory I'm sure it said they would get into trouble with Roger Corman cos he had the other film and so they weren't allowed to put it out under that title. And that's what I don't understand, there's heaps of films that have the same title so how come this one wasn't allowed to be released just because another movie had the same title. It just doesn't make sense. Unless, of course, the article wasn't right and the US distributors simply decided to change it as you said in order not to confuse people and it really wasn't a question of not being allowed to.

Actually you probably are right about them not being able to use the title. I don't know what I was thinking.

In any event, when it finally gets reissued they should title it PETER JACKSON'S BRAINDEAD.
