Latest newsletter clue: HEAVEN'S GATE
Criterion said on their facebook page that a film from 1950 will be getting a Blu-ray upgrade, so one of the following will be announced tomorrow:
Les enfants terribles
The Floweres of St. Francis
Night and the City
Most likely it is Rashomon.
Id rather it be the Furies or Night and the City but Id guess Rashomon. This is supposed to be their biggest month for announcements, I hope there is something I want from them.
According to Criterion's front page, the cut of HEAVEN'S GATE is "Michael Cimino's never before available cut", so it sounds like he made some changes to the film. The running time is 216-minutes, 3 minutes shorter than the original length. I wonder if in doing this "new cut", Cimino might have included some of the extra scenes from the short cut, as opposed to just trimming down the long cut a bit.

Wish that Japanese horror/sci-fi set was on blu. Damn.
Yes, I'd love to see those Japanese films on Blu! So I second Nick's "Damn."

Video Dungeon - News: Criterion Collection November 2012 Releases (BD/DVD)
Truly excellent month of releases, no way in hell I can afford it all!
Some of these titles have been so long in coming that these releases give me hope that the Imamura titles that they have been sitting on for all these years may actually see the light of day.
Forgot to mention this, but Criterion has placeholders up for a lot of different directors (the following is an incomplete list):
Paul Thomas Anderson
Ahmed El Maanouni
Djibril Diop Mambéty
Emilio Gómez Muriel
Andre de Toth
Obviously this could be nothing, but there are a number of big names that don't have placeholders and there are strong rumors that they are going to release films from some of these directors (and one confirmed release, Christoper Nolan's FOLLOWING).
Well, I guess my bitching finally paid off because Criterion is releasing those 4 Shochiku sc-fi/horror titles and it's about friggin' time already! I think they missed an opportunity to release it on a more appropriate date, like October, but it's still good. I can understand the disappointment these four will be DVD-only and not BR, but considering these are, ahem, "lesser titles" I'm just glad they are being released and standard def DVD will do just fine. All I ask is these be released with new and improved transfers and excellent English subs.
I also hope Criterion goes the extra mile to include the English dubs for "The X From Outer Space", "Genocide", and "Goke". I mean, if they could do that for the Eclipse release of Rossellini's "Age of the Medici" by including both the Italian and English tracks, then they should attempt the same for this release!
Im passing on everything again , however I will rent Rashomon to see what all the hoopla is all about, and if I like it, I will get it ..its only 88 minutes which is pretty painless
