Re: GIALLO...DARIO ARGENTO

The first reviews for "Giallo" are very mixed...it seems that you like it or you dislike it!
It seems to be a kind of different thriller for Argento,it won't please everyone, and the ending is said to be "polemical".

The film, according to Alan Jones, has at least two fans,Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth :

If this plays within 4 hours of me, I'll likely drive to see it even though I know I'll be disappointed.

Re: GIALLO...DARIO ARGENTO

Argento was in person this past Sunday at the NY Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors Con and during a stage interview with Maitland McDonagh(author of BROKEN MINDS BROKEN MIRRORS), Angento answered questions regarding his latest film, GIALLO and the news doesn't look good. Argento said that he doesn't know about the current status of GIALLO and if the film will be released here in the US or anywhere else this year. He lost contact with GIALLO's producers who are not answering his calls about the film and Dario said that he's not that enthusiastic about the film either since contrary to his other films, he didn't write or produced the film and he was simply a director for hire on GIALLO. But he did had great things to say about Adrian Brody, his lead actor in the film. After the stage interview, I personally met with Dario who autographed my copy of PROFONDO ARGENTO(which Dario commented that it was a great book on him) and even posed with me for a photo. He was so great, gracious and nice in person and by the way, he talked in English during the stage interview(although he had an Italian interpreter with him) and he spoke English with his fans including myself.

Re: GIALLO...DARIO ARGENTO

Yeah, after I saw the Q&A sunday my hopes of seeing Giallo anytime soon are pretty much gone. And also, Argento himself didn't seem too keen on people seeing it, so maybe it's better this way? haha

I guess we'll find out and know more about the quality of the film during the forthcoming Edinburgh festival. Good Luck!

To this day,Argento still doesn't like "Cat'O'Nine tails","too mainstream and dull" according to him
He's also not too warm with the US experience of "Trauma"...

Dario Argento is back to his roots with this fun, gory, and stylish film!, 6 June 2009

Author: (SlutFromTheBlackLagoon) from Paris, France

Dario Argento is well and truly back to his roots with "Giallo", the story of a woman in Italy being kidnapped by the notorious serial killer Yellow, and the race against time her sister Linda (Emmanuelle Seigner), and Inspector Enzo Avolfi (Adrien Brody) endure to find her.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. As always, Adrien Brody puts in a beast of a performance as the vibrant detective, and backing him up is Emmanuelle Seigner playing the worried sister with class and style. All in all the acting is this movie is surprisingly solid.

Another good point is the fantastic gore effects. Giallo is genuine brutal and bloody stuff, some torture sequences had me cringing and even looking away. Don't get me wrong either, it's definitely not similar to stupid torture porn flicks such as Hostel, and Saw.

The visuals are mostly quite good, it's nothing compared to Deep Red or Suspiria, but it's respectable enough. I feel Dario steered away from the freaky and crazed visuals of earlier films, and made something more like an actual thriller. Don't get me wrong, some giallo themes are present, it's just not as "in your face" as other gialli flicks. But of course with all this good, there must be some bad. The dialog is quite frankly mediocre; some lines are cheesy as hell and laughable. Also, trying not spoiling anything, the ending and the killer reveal are major letdowns. Overall, Giallo is very entertaining and even people who are not fans of the sub-genre will enjoy it. I'd say its Dario's best work since "Phenomena". 7.5/10.

The reviews sound positive in a reticent way...Interesting they say it's better than SLEEPLESS, since I thought SLEEPLESS was a top film!

Re: GIALLO...DARIO ARGENTO

How are these people getting to see this movie if it is not coming out in Europe or the USA anytime soon?

Are screener copies floating around?

Re: GIALLO...DARIO ARGENTO

That eyeforfilm review has a mega-spoiler up close to the top, which it doesn't warn about.

It's also the usual snarky half-bright bullshit (or it was up to the spoiler, which is where I bailed: possibly the remainder is brilliantly incisive)

Didn't look at the other two links (not that I don't thank Guillaume for posting 'em )
