Finally watched the DVD of JOE that I've had on my shelf for a while. Boyle truly does dominate the proceedings here...in a good way. For the characters, it works that Dennis Patrick is pretty meek in comparison...makes Patrick's bursts of violence more effective. The camaraderie mixed with discomfort that permeates their relationship is one of the best parts of the film. Some underwhelming, weak production design and clunky acting / characterizations aside (particularly the "hippies," who are all too caricatured for my tastes), this is still quite potent.
Maybe a fairly obvious comparison, but this would be a good double feature with Forman's TAKING OFF (I'm sure these 2 have probably screened together before).
Pat McDermott, who played Susan Sarandon's scumbag boyfriend, was very good as the dope chemist in FRENCH CONNECTION and was also the title character in De Palma's DIONYSUS. Never appeared in anything else. Francine "Fran" Middleton who played one of the hippie chicks at the orgy was Martin's train victim in MARTIN and in SWEET SAVIOR aka THE LOVE THRILL MURDERS with Troy Donahue. Three films on her resume and nude in each one...gotta love the '70s.
