THE CASE OF THE SMILING STIFFS

I remember this getting a mainstream release here in australia and my parents going to see it!

I have since found out that Sean S Cunningham directed it, and it stars Harry Reems, and was a pr0n blockbuster!

So how come it hasn't had a decent DVD release like all the other filth?

Lightbulb THE CASE OF THE SMILING STIFFS

There is one valid reason I can proffer:
"The Case Of The Smiling Stiffs" was lensed about the same time as "Deep Throat", and in the same general location (south Florida); but it was conceived to be a “Soft-X” movie. However, sometime afterward, explicit footage was added to it, and it was sent back out under another title. Which version should get released? If it's to be the explicit version, that would require a different duplicator / label / company?
Maybe S. Cunningham does not want this movie to be available?

I recall reading that this movie was utterly awful - and not in a good way. It was meant to be some sort of "nudie comedy" and failed miserably apparently.

I think it is also a "lost" film in that the original elements cannot be found? Was it ever released on vhs even?

Oh, and yeah - I wanna see it. Kind of badly - I'm into self-abuse that way.

I recall it under a different title though. Something about a full moon or some shit? Anyway, it's on dvd.

Good grief - now I'm going to have to buy the thing.

    Shit.

Probably a bootleg, but I NEED it. The alternate title was THE FULL MOON MURDERS btw - thats what you were thinking of William.

Now all I need is those crappy Cunnigham soccer movies and I can have a fantastic festival of mind-bogglingly bad cinema.

I checked the website of the company who put it out and it seems legit, but I'm not familiar with it being based in Australia and all. Aaron might know.

Re: THE CASE OF THE SMILING STIFFS

Many years ago I walked through the ruins of an adult theater in Columbus, Ohio. The wrecking crew were taking a lunch break, so I was able to see what the place looked like split open (in the same way a geologist gets to look at oil shale after an earthquake). Laying on the floor, behind the screen, visible to daylight for the first time in years, was a poster for "Smiling Stiffs".
I asked the former manager of the place about this title and he said it was one of the worst movies he'd ever viewed.

And then, of course, there's the one of a handful of other Aussie guys here who "might know" too.

There's been conjecture down here for years as to just how "legit" Force really are and, judging by the titles "licenced" for their Asian catalogue, I can't entirely say that they actually are 100% legit. I find it very doubtful that big-wigs in Hong Kong and South Korea would licence A-titles to some little indie distributor in Oz, when their licence fees are far too high for other overseas companies to pick up the very same product!

But as for Case of the Smiling Stiffs, there is a slight possibility that it was one of the titles they may have gained from the defunct Seven Keys catalogue (another indie cinema and video distributor long since passed), as I've noticed a couple of that company's titles turn up on the Force label. Guaranteed though, if that's the case, it will be the same censored 72m R-rated version that was released to drive-ins and video here donkey's years ago; however, in the world of porn (hard and soft) DVDs authored from video masters are par for the course...so approach with caution.

Case of the Full Moon Murders was put out by SWV on VHS & DVD-R under the title Sex on the Groove Tube. I have the DVD-R, ok print. Film is sort of on the stupid side but worth a look.

Correct me if I'm wrong, this is the one with LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT's Fred J. Lincoln, right?

Well, this is a rare case where the dubious legality of the thing is a non-issue for me. Reason being that Cunningham has all but disowned the movie (meaning he won't be participating in any official release) and I do recall him saying in an interview that he thought the original elements were lost or badly damaged.

Obviously this hasn't stopped it from appearing in various sub-standard issues over the years. This is one of those kinds of movies that hold a perverse fascination for me - Lincoln and Reems in the cast, and its horrendous reputation make me want to see it. This dvd, legal or not (and probably badly cut), is the closest I think I will ever get to this, so I'll buy it.

All I can say is: people asked, I passed on what I knew, that's all there was to it. No skin off my nose if you're buying a bootleg, as what you do with your money is entirely your business and not for me to judge or pass comment over. My input into this thread was simply to impart some info I knew, not to appear to be passing judgement on anyone. Sorry if it came across that way as it certainly wasn't what I intended...

Of course Mike! I certainly meant nothing defensive by my comments as well. I found your information quite helpful (as always). Truth is, I try to avoid boots for the most part (for many reasons), but once in awhile I make an exception.
