Next Warner Film Noir Set news (July 07)
I somehow missed the newest Noir City Sentinel, but this was posted at the Back Alley Noir forum:
"According to the latest Noir Sentinel, the next Warner noir set (July 2007) will feature a whopping 10 films instead of the usual 5, with two features per disc (presumably with little or no bonus features) for a total of five discs. The rumored films to be included are: Act of Violence (MGM, 1949) Cornered (RKO, 1945) Crime Wave (WB, 1954) Decoy (Monogram, 1946) Illegal (WB, 1955) Mystery Street (MGM, 1950) Side Street (MGM, 1950) Tension (MGM, 1950) They Live By Night (RKO, 1949) Where Danger Lives (RKO, 1950)" If this pans out, this is a very satisfactory selection. ACT OF VIOLENCE is probably my favorite here, but the whole lineup looks well chosen. MYSTERY STREET is my pick for dark horse of the set, a surprisingly grisly and frank film with typically top notch work from John Alton. Start saving for a dark summer of 07 noir fans!

There's a Home Theater Forum chat with Warners reps on Monday night which might provide some info.

Re: Next Warner Film Noir Set news (July 07)
Not a dud in the bunch, although I admit I have not seen ILLEGAL.
TENSION has knockout work from Richard Basehart and Audry Totter. A terrific movie MYSTERY STREET has great Noir atmosphere and fine acting from Ricardo Montalban and others ACT OF VIOLENCE, incredible work by Van Heflin and Robert Ryan DECOY: once an ultra-rare title, very intriguing, let's hope this print is good CRIME WAVE: my personal favorite on this list. An absolute knockout of a movie. Great use of LA locations, strong characters and good dialog: Sterling Hayden, Charles Bronson and very good lead from Gene Nelson. You won't soon forget Jay Novello and his animal hospital. Terrific stuff. Very glad it's coming to DVD. The two lesser titles, imho, are WHERE DANGER LIVES (just an ok Noir, but it does have Mitchum) and THE BIG STEAL which is an enjoyable movie if not really very Noir. |

Re: Next Warner Film Noir Set news (July 07)
Ready to get your noir on? This set hits da street this week! Looks like WB is also releasing these as double features, the listing at DVD Talk is:
ACT OF VIOLENCE/MYSTERY STREET CRIME WAVE/DECOY ILLEGAL/THE BIG STEAL THEY LIVE BY NIGHT/SIDE STREET WHERE DANGER LIVES/TENSION Sucks about CORNERED being dropped, I`ve seen it but don`t have a copy. THE BIG STEAL is a decent sub but it ain`t no Dick Powell!

Re: Next Warner Film Noir Set news (July 07)
There are few Noirs better than ACT OF VIOLENCE. Just a wonderfully tense film and the car chase through the abandoned Wall Street district in SIDE STREET shows why Anthony Mann is one of the best directors there was.
