    Depressing Endings

Inspired by a thread I started on Out of the Blue, I decided to create a thread on depressing endings in film. Here's my list

    Out of the Blue
    Night of the Living Dead
    Chinatown
    The Great Silence
    Expect the Unexpected
    Ms. 45
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
    Violent Cop
    Brazil(Gilliam's Cut)
    Arlington Road

"Saving Private Ryan" gets my vote.... Also yesterday's anniversary date of the events on 9-11.

GREAT one, John! Yes, I still get misty when I see this scene - but actually, I feel sorry for junior as he keeps trying to catch up to pop in the snow, and dad keeps ignoring him - but I think when they embrace it's more of a happy ending.

    How could I forget these:

    BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN
    MIDNIGHT COWBOY
    THE COWBOYS
    DEAD MAN WALKING
    THE PLEDGE
    CARNAL KNOWLEDGE
    FIVE EASY PIECES (heartbreaking)
    LAST TANGO IN PARIS

Many more that I'll think of later. Brain is tired.

And one final pick from my childhood, KING KONG LIVES. Don't hit me.

CARNAL KNOWLEDGE!?!? I never thought of the ending as sad. I think Nicholson plays a creep who got what he deserved in it.

As for KING KONG LIVES, my wife has a girlfriend who loves giant monster movies, so recently she brought over this tape so I could see just how bad it is (and it sure was).

The crazy thing is, this girl warned us that she cries every time the movie ends, and we thought she was exaggerating. So the film ends, and she SCREAMS AND WAILS AS IF SHE'S BEING TORTURED!!!! She runs into the bathroom, cries and cries, comes back to the living room with a box of tissues and can't stop crying, all through the credits and well afterward. Amazing.

CARNAL KNOWLEDGE, the entire film after the college years is depressing. Ann-Margret more than Nicholson. One of the best films of the 1970's IMO.

Joe, I also found MANHATTAN to be quite depressing.

Michael, the stuff you mention IS depressing in CARNAL KNOWLEDGE and I agree about its reputation - but I was thinking we're discussing sad ENDINGS, specifically here - the ending isn't sad, IMO.
