I'm biased, but I wasn't too hot on Cassavetes first time I saw his films, xcept for 'Chinese Bookies'. Watching them again, especially having seen alot more arthouse and Euro filmsand finally adjusting to his unconventional 'naturalistic' narrative style (which isn't THAT unconventional, really) his films become even better.

I'm considering picking up the R2 Boxset of this off the Play sales:

Does anybody own this and is it worth picking up? I haven't seen any Cassavetes before but his work certainly sounds interesting.

I *love* Cassavetes work, Richard; but to some extent, it's an acquired taste. The set is definitely worth picking up, but I would recommend borrowing/renting one of the films first, as I've shown Cassavetes movies to friends (and to some students) who have hated them.

I was thinking about renting one or two but then these type of boxsets don't usually come up that often in the sales. I do have a birthday coming up at the end of the month though.....

Anyone seen his early 60s films, Too Late Blues, A Pair of Boots, and A Child is Waiting?

I haven't seen anywhere near as much by him as I'd like to:

    Shadows A
    Faces B+
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie A

"A Pair of Boots" (1962) was a 50-minute episode of The Lloyd Bridges Show with Lloyd and son Beau opposite Cassavetes regular Seymour Cassel, John Marley of FACES, Fred Draper (FACES, OPENING NIGHT) and Maurice McEndree (producer of SHADOWS and FACES).

"My Daddy Can Lick Your Daddy" (1963) was a shorter episode - for a half-hour slot - directed by Cassavetes, written by Robert Towne and starring Lloyd and son Jeff opposite Gary Lockwood, Fred Draper and Lelia Goldoni (SHADOWS).

Other television work: Cassavetes wrote and directed an episode of the Bob Hope/Chrysler Theatre, "In Pursuit of Excellence," starring Ed Begley, Glenn Corbett, John Marley and Fred Draper.

You won't catch any of these on television, but they are available for viewing at The Paley Center for Media in NYC.

Paul is right about him being an acquired taste. For me Husbands works the best. then Woman Under The Influence, Chinese Bookie.

I saw Shadows and Faces way too young, but almost don't want to F with the memory. They were unsettling to a kid, so different than normal mainstream fare.
