Re: Four Flies On Grey Velvet

This got me thinking and I watched the film again last night. My print is so shitty, with many visual flaws and hard cropping on the right side of the frame. Still, it is a film with so many awesome and striking images. My favorites are the first-person shot when Roberto is in pursuit, walking through and throwing aside the series of velvet curtains to enter the abandoned theater. So cool! And I love when he is sitting alone in his apartment with a gun, looking through the glass patio at the trees swaying in the wind outside... I don't know why but it's so fuckin eerie to me. We need a new disc!

This is Dario's greatest use of the 2.35:1 frame. Bring it and Sold!

Thanks for letting us know, Michael. What a charming image

My dad had a friend who accidentally defecated in his pants. But that's a story for after dinner, when the ladies are out of the room and the chocolates and brandy are on the drawing room coffee table...

Re: Four Flies On Grey Velvet

The Alamo Drafthouse is playing this on Monday here in Austin, presented by Yo La Tengo of all things. Doesn't say if it's a 35mm print, but I'm assuming so because it is the Drafthouse. I'm gonna try to go, as I've refused to ever see the movie in any of the shitty bootleg VHS versions.

This is almost too much! The suspense is getting unbearable!

I really love this film, even though I've only seen it in less than pristine prints. For me, this is my favorite in the animal trilogy.

Is that before or after you slag-off the release for not being a THX-certified transfer in one of your reviews

Re: Four Flies On Grey Velvet

I'm definitely psyched to hear this news of a better transfer... I was lukewarm on the film until recently, but it's risen in my estimation considerably. It's a key title in his early filmography, bridging the comparative restraint of Bird and Cat with the more decorative excesss of Deep Red.

Re: Four Flies On Grey Velvet

I'm a little on the fence about this one, Troy. It's not in the league of Argento's best gialli, IMO, and nor is it in the league of some of Fulci and Martino's better gialli, neither. That said, it's got some amazing visuals and a couple of nicely executed set-pieces.

Although I've owned a bootleg for more than ten years, I've only see the film once, and that was when it was projected in 35mm at the National Film Theatre In London, back in the summer of '96.
