AUDITION - the closest, as it slightly frottages grindhouse/splatter/horror flicks as most of the above are more in the camp of.

To me a good gore film is 'arthouse' anyway, but it's whether you are talking about Bunuel/Goddard/Costa/Straub-Hullet type 'arthouse' or something else?
Some pretty liberal interpretations...
What happened to the days when The Wild bunch was just a great western?

Re: Art House Gore films

Nope, I too have a problem with saying WILD BUNCH is splatter movie....

Actually, i wouldnt call MOSt of your choices "splatter" movies....

I agree with this term from WIKIPEDIA

Quote:
A splatter film or gore film is a sub-genre of horror film that deliberately focuses on graphic portrayals of gore and graphic violence. These films, through the use of special effects and excessive blood and guts, tend to display an overt interest in the vulnerability of the human body and the theatricality of its mutilation.

Splatter films, according to film critic Michael Arnzen, "self-consciously revel in the special effects of gore as an artform
Splatter films= OVERgore!!!

Camp appreciation, irony, etc.

You could call any piece of trash an arthouse film nowadays if you are so inclined to.

Er, I'm not so sure I'd count the Guinea Pig flicks, particularly since they were made for and distributed exclusively on video, but that's just me.

I would add Doug Buck's "Cutting Moments" to the list, though.

Re: Art House Gore films

Cronenberg is essential as well. The academics' have been kind of relugtant to embrace his films just like it took them 110 years to accept Lovecraft. But it's happening. I think he will be one of the most talked about directors in the next 10 years.

Paul Morrissey's Flesh For Frankenstein and Blood For Dracula?

For that matter, I think some of his "street" films, especially Mixed Blood, might qualify as well.

Easy.

THE BEYOND makes little sense. Its loaded with bizarre imagery. The whole thing simply REEKS of off-kilter.

And thats very Arthouse - at least in my book.
