Anyone seen any of his films? If so, what was your impression? Only one from him I've seen is A Taxing Woman, which is a mixture of drama, tragedy, and comedy.

He was a great director and I'd give his 85' film TAMPOPO my highest recommendation. Wonderful lead performances by Itami's wife Nobuko Miyamoto and Tsutomu Yamazaki with a typically good turn by Koji Yakusho in a memorable supporting role.
