This is really a question for Troy.
What the hell was that? The new music and titles at the beginning were terrible. Why did Leone do that?
As far as content goes, was there anything in the film that we hadn't seen before. The only version I've seen is the Image disc and it's been a little while.

I haven't had time to watch this yet, but I set my timer for it and plan to visit it soon. The answers to your question can be found in the other TCM thread on this page...

Well, I spot checked my tape of this today... the differences that I can see thus far, without a complete viewing...
New computer generated titles (in red)...
FADE UP FROM BLACK TO CLOSE SHOT OF THE FIRE (as in the Image disc)
"Alfredo Leone Presents"
"A Mario Bava Film"
All new narration - actually, an improvement over the other hokier versions, though the first part was unintelligible due to a signal breakup - scored with new music.
Scene plays out as normal - after Steele gets the mask hammered onto her face...
New computer generated title (in red)
"La maschera del demonio"
Titles play out as before, albeit with a synth score in place of Nicolosi's title cue.
As I looked through the tape, I noticed some other scenes that played out with ambient sounds on the Image DVD are now rescored with Les Baxter's music from BARON BLOOD - notably the child's walk to the barn and Princess Asa calling Javutich from the grave.

I'm curious as to why Leone did this.

He did it to secure international copyright - since this was an Italian film with the US version being different, the US one wouldn't fall under his ownership. By making these revisions, he now owns it. It was purely a business move.

Got it. Makes sense. Still don't like those new red titles, though...

I don't, either, but we shouldn't be seeing much of this variant. The one Leone put out on DVD is pretty much the official version now.
