View Full Version : Cotton Comes to Harlem DVD question

I finally found a copy of MGM's Cotton Comes to Harlem but was distressed to find that it's labeled as 'Standard' on the back of the box. The IMDB offers nothing about proper aspect ratio except that it was made with 35mm.
Knowing MGM more often than not would release films in their proper ratio (excepting some recent releases), was this film made this way or is this just a pan-and-scan release?

I dug out my copy of this DVD and checked it. I haven't watched the film since I bought it a couple of years ago and couldn't remember feeling it was badly done.
It is full screen but I never noticed any cropping of the image on either side nor any real extra headroom on top or bottom that would indicate a missing matte. The movie looks perfectly fine so I guess the film was shot at around 1.66:1 with the idea of matting it theatrically. The disc looks fine and if you're interested in the film I'd recommend grabbing it.

I saw it at a drive-in when it first came out and I think it was widescreen; maybe matted. Then again I was only about 6 years old so not the best memory.
