Anyone seen this Franco film? I'm on my way to Best Buy in a few hours but I'm not sure if I should drop $20 on this.

Michael, this movie is bad, IMO. It's cheap and the acting is atrocious. (despite Howard Vernon). And it is really boring. Save your money for a Franco classic from the sixties or another Usher movie.
Here are some other opinions:

I rather like this one. Despite the low budget, production values are decent and some of the photography is really striking. Howard Vernon is very good as usual and Franco makes interesting use of clips from THE AWFUL DR. ORLOF. Definitely worth a look and vastly superior to the director's more recent work.

One loves it, one hates it. Yep, sounds like a Franco film.
I think I'm going to buy EXORCISM instead and give it a second shot. I'll pick up REVENGE in a few more weeks.

I love Revenge. I personally can't bring myself to not love any film with Howard Vernon giving us his best "looney face", but this one aside from the budget really is striking.
While it does feel a bit out of place in Franco's mid 80's cycle, being that there is NO nudity and very little gore, it remains very creepy and atmospheric. Vernon and Romay also make a very striking on screen duo, and the movie has a bit more of a "completed film" feel than I feel many Franco movies do.

In his review at the DVD-Drive-In, George Reis wrote that "REVENGE OF USHER" is the kind of movie you might have to watch in installment, because you'll become as comatose as Usher's daughter while you are viewing it. The English dubbing is atrocious, the dialog laughable and the special effects in the finale are totally unconvincing: the fall of the house is depicted through shaky camera motions and unconvincing props dropping from above.
Franco's early efforts such as "Awful dr. Orloff", "Sadistic Baron von Klaus" and "Diabolical Dr.Z" are much better.
You can find a slightly more positive opinion here:
Nevertheless, it seems that some people still love the movie.
Well, I have to admit, I didn't like "Revenge of the House of Usher", but I have seen worse from Jess Franco.

It's definitely worth seeing and owning. Great use of color and old footage from the 1st Orlof is a bonus.
Watch it in French language option. The Eng lang dubbing is atrocious. Read my positive review on www.latarnia.com on the Spanish horror filmography.
It's still only the French version. Franco's original Spanish version is the director's cut and reportedly much better.

I like this one as well, though it seems to me a fairly atypical Franco film. The liner notes (by Tim Lucas?) capture the overall look and feel of the film when they suggest that had VAMPYR been filmed in color, it might have looked like this film. They both share a similar sense of pace as well.
