I thought a Deodato report card thread would be interesting.

House on the Edge of the Park - B+ (till the end, it's just not cohesive and destoys the story subtly)
Cannibal Holocaust - C (I've never really enjoyed this film, haven't gotten through it.... Not because I am a pussy or anything like that. I just hate it. Though I'll give it a C because it does have some good merit and integrity in "some" scenes.)

I am curious about Deodato's sole, Italian crime flick, Live like a Cop Die like a Man, and wonder if anyone seen it?

Don't think it's available on DVD (?) but you can find this title on pre-cert (UK) under the title 'The Terminators' (Video For Pleasure label I think).

It's highly entertaining. Marc Porel and Ray Lovelock on their finest form as a pair of 'Special Squad' coppers who make Bodie and Doyle look like pussies (That's if you remember The Professionals!!) Well worth tracking down. Features some stupidly silly motorbike chases, lots of wheelies and a blind man's guide dog being run over and killed!

I love it, one of my faves! Vastly underrated IMHO.

I got a DVD-R of it from Crimson Cult Video. It's one of the better Italian cop flicks from the '70s. If you like that style, you'll probably like that film. But if you're not a fan of the genre, it won't likely win you over.

Everone gave cannibal holocaust high marks.....i couldnt do that. If it wasnt for the animal murders, it would not have been that shocking. I think the guy is pretty filthy for doing that, then again....thats been said more than once.

I disagree with that. The main thing that makes that film shocking and worth the time spent for me is the retribution taken by the cannibals at the end. And this involves no animal death.

But we've been over this one before...

I agree 100%. Take away the animal deaths and no one is talking about this film.

I am probably in the minority here, because i didn't find the killing of the animals shocking at all, though on the other hand I found the finale of Cannibal Holocaust to be quite intense. It features no business with animals, but rather man acting as an animal...

Now on to the ratings:

I thought you guys might like to see this ad I stumbled upon in an old Variety from 1983 that announced a new film called CANNIBAL FURY by Deodato. Obviously it never got made, but it is pretty cool to see.

Last Cannibal World B+
Cannibal Holocaust A

House on the Edge of the Park would have been such a great movie had the writers not completely and utterly fucked up the ending.

Cut and Run is one of Deodato's better films, IMHO. Not as good as the other two "jungle madness" films of his, but still a highly entertaining actioner.

Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man-My second favorite Deodato film after CH, as well as one of my favorite Italian crime films. The opening chase scene is excellent as well as the ambush sequence while the two main characters are doing target practice. Atypical compared to other Italian poliziotteschi films. I wish there were HK and japanese films that would use some of the aspects of this movie. Too bad there wasn't a sequel or that Deodato didn't do any more poliziotteschi/crime films. I get the sense with the ending that the two characters are bored due to the fact there is no one left to kill.

I completely agree in regards to Live Like a Cop, a wonderful poliziotteschi that actually comes close to being my favorite of the genre (although nothing will top The Boss). I almost think that the film is supposed to work as a tongue-in-cheek variation on the genre... the filmmakers being smart enough not to go for the obvious spoofing of the genre's conventions, instead they raise the action/circumstances to near-hysterical levels, and the result is a film that looks, sounds and feels like an Italian crime film but ends up being almost surreal (and certainly singular) in its anarchic glee. The film makes Umberto Lenzi's poliziotteschis look like exercises in restraint. :)

I've never seen a poliziotteschi, and don't really think they'd be up my alley. But, this sounds like the one I should probably try!
