View Full Version : Brentwood's STREET FIGHTER discs

Just thought I'd throw this out there for anyone who's interested in the Streetfighter films. Got Brentwood's Ten Faces of Sonny Chiba box a week or so ago, and the three official Streetfighter films are very good transfers. (The 4th, SISTER STREETFIGHTER, had some obvious tape dropout, but was still ok and isn't REALLY a Streetfighter film, anyway.) The three official films are far better than my Platinum versions which I thought were ok until I saw better.
The other transfers in the box range from good to horrible, but for $11.99, it's more than worth it if only for the 3 Streetfighters.

some are widescreen, too.

I still think that the Diamond verisons are the best looking ones readily available. The one edge that Brentwood has is that in addition to the English track, there is a Japanese language track on the first film. There are no subtitles though.

I was glad to hear the Japanese track to at last hear his name pronounced as "Surugy." New Line messed up and wrote the name as Terry Sugury at the beginning of the first film, and the English dubbing in the subsequent films bounces back and forth between the two so that you never know what the hell this guy's name is.
Yes, I've heard the Diamond versions are best, but I was just speaking for the amazing value of the Brentwood set. For anyone who has only a mild interest in seeing Streetfighter, you can't do much better than $11.99 for all of them plus 6 other films.

You're right. I'm a bit of a fanboy when it comes to those movies though. I hope someone will give them a proper release someday.

I have the Brentwood set like most of you and really like it, but is "Streetfighter" going to get a richly deserved special edition any time soon?

I seriously doubt it, but it'd be nice if it did.

A question for Ian..
Are the Diamond DVDs uncut ( the original x-rated cut) ? I know the VCI edition was, but was not as crisp as the Diamond set. I have also been on a Chiba kick as of late ( especially after seeing the kick ass Kill Bill trailer ) and even though I still have the Image laser discs, I would like to pick up these gems on DVD in their best presentation available - at least for now . Chiba plays a great bad ass, and hopefully get some new recognition with Kill Bill.

The Diamond discs are uncut, except for Sister Streetfighter, which has never been released uncut outside of Japan as far as I know.

I have just watched, and finished watching the complete street fighter saga set by VCI . I now I am a fan of Mr. chiba. I thought all the movies where really entertaining.
Sister street fighter has the highest amount of blood, and violence next to the original the street fighter which has even more blood, and violence, but sister street fighter has more nudity then any of the other three movies, and if they rated the four movies today Street fighter, and sister street fighter would be the only two that would recieve a rated r or unrated. The return of the street fighter, and the street fighters last stand by today's rating would get pg-13 at the most for a rating. How much longer is the japan version of sister street fighter vs US version the us version I have clocks in at just under 81 minutes.
To bad there weren't japan audio track for these films. Maybe tarantino's rolling thunder pictuers can saves these film's in restored version's being that taratino is such a big fan of sonny chiba.

After watching this suberb Bruce Lee (I doubt these films will ever look better, since they did a huge re-mastering on these films) -box set ( http://www.hongkonglegends.co.uk/index.php?tle_id=82&art_id=73&v=s ), it would be great too see Sonny Chiba´s Steetfighter-films with the same quality.
Are these Streetfighter-films ever released in a proper way, in Japan or Hong Kong?
All the US-releases are these "cheap-ones", with Diamond having the best quality?
Sorry to start this again, but there are so many of these cheap-releases out there.. :)

The only reason the Brentwood/Diamond releases of the STREET FIGHTER films are at all decent is that they're lifted from the old New Line laserdiscs, as (I believe) are VCI's. I wish I had the laserdiscs, as they'd look better. I do have STREETFIGHTER/RETURN OF STREET FIGHTER from Diamond, and it ain't too bad for an LD rip, certainly much better than their rip of the LAST MAN ON EARTH Image LD, which is pretty bad.

How is this box?

the new set is nice from what I've seen. The new print for the first film is a little greenish, but MILES better than the version we've seen for years. And BTW, to correct the above, besides Sister Streetfighter, Streetfighter's Last Revenge has also been cut for every dubbed release, so the one on the Diamond set is cut. They, along with Return of the Streetfighter and the original were all cut(the other three before they were dubbed.), after The Streetfighter played the first time uncut in NY and caused such a problem. Return of the Streetfighter's extra bits were added back in for the New Line laserdiscs, which is where the source for the Diamond discs come from. Last Revenge and Sister...were never released uncut except in Japan. The new UK boxset is the first time that Streetfighter's Last Revenge has been seen outside of Japan uncut. The upcoming U.S. release should feature ALL four films uncut and from different elements from the UK version, so I HOPE no greenish/darkish look. They also should have the English dub tracks as well.
