View Full Version : The Devil's Messenger

Has anybody seen The Devil's Messenger with Lon Chaney Jr? What did you think about it? I got Alpha's DVD yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. I usually dislike alot more movies than I like, especially these older cheap ones but Devil's Messenger wasn't half bad. Its an anthology of 3 stories from an old TV show called 13 Demon Street connected with a wraparound story involving Lon Chaney Jr as Satan judging sinners in hell before coming across a woman who killed herself named Satanya (her birth name?) who he recruits to be his messenger. She delivers various cursed 'gifts' to people on earth and they eventually become hell's newest inhabitants.. Chaney really wasn't the best choice to play Satan.. He seems way too likeable and kind for the role, only giving it a touch of darkness in the last bit that closes the movie. The stories themselves aren't really anything spectacular. One is a decent ghost story, the last has a nice surprise ending.. Overall it has a mildly eerie feeling of a Twilight Zone or something similar. I'm glad I picked this one up.

I watched the Alpha DVD of this film last night and thought it was ok. The movie does seem to pay homage in a way to shows like ONE STEP BEYOND and THE TWILIGHT ZONE but that's not such a bad thing at all. The first story about the photographer was pretty good. As a matter of fact after watching it, I got the feeling that Rod Serling "borrowed" the idea for the Roddy McDowell portion of the NIGHT GALLERY pilot film and just changed it up a bit and to greater effect. The second story I thought was pretty silly and the third was the most atmospheric of the trio. I thought Chaney was really good in the role he had in the wraparound with a nice touch of over the top lunacy. Not a bad film to see for $5.

Anybody else wishing for a SWV release of 13 Demon Street?

hell yeah, they got ahold of one episode "THE GIRL IN THE GLACIER" and put it on thier TERROR IN THE MINDIGHT SUN disc.Chaney is even better here than on the Devil's Messenger re-shot intro. He begins with telling us something to the effect that he must remain at 13 Demon street for all eternity unless he can find someone who commited a worse sin than his.Great stuff,I'd be all over it in an instant if SWV put the series on dvd.

I was hoping they would do it the same way they put out the Veil...which, ironically, had two more Demon Street episodes on it. ;)

I just got done watching this and thought it was just okay. (** 1/2). I thought the first story was pretty bad but the second and third I really enjoyed. I agree the third story had a very good ending. I also thought Lon Chaney was very good. They should have just kept the camera on him and let him send people to hell. Pretty funny stuff.

I was rather disappointed with this film considering Strock & Chaney were involved. The first story was okay. The second made no sense at all and I kept expecting Sven from Reptilicus to show up. The third one had some nice atmosphere.
Chaney seemed to be having fun in his role.
Maybe I was just expecting too much. This is not a movie I'll be revisiting anytime soon.

I'm still waiting for a 13 Demon Street box set...but since SWV is releasing 'The Black Hand' again on an upcoming disc I don't think that's in the cards.
