View Full Version : He Walked by Night

I saw He Walked by Night recently, and what amazed me about the film is its sewer chase which anticipates The Third Man by a year, and is a brilliant suspenseful moment of its own. Wouldn't surprise me if the sequence had an influence on the one in TTM because they are almost identical except for a couple of small differences here and there. Actually, I liked it more than T-Men, which was good, but nothing spectacular.

Richard Basehart gives a brilliant performance and shows some of the type of characteristics that makes him interesting in the two Fellini films(La Strada, Il Bidone).

Basehart was brillant in this film, I loved his little dog. I also found T Men to be watchable - has all time fave Charles McGraw! - but also average. I have these on the early dvd two pack also featuring Raw Deal, another fine noir with an early John Ireland appearance. I've been wanting to check out Il bidone for a while, had no idea he was in La Strada. My want list is getting ridiculous!

Basehart makes for one memorable villain in this film.

"He Walked By Night" is a terrific film and I'll echo the praise of Richard Basehart. He is excellent in the movie and is aided by a fine supporting cast. The film is beautifully constructed and shot by the memorable Noir tandem of Mann and Alton. Basehart gives another devious performance in the underrated Mann/Alton period piece Noir, "The Black Book", aka, "Reign Of Terror".
I also enjoyed "T-Men" quite a bit but actually liked "Raw Deal" a bit better myself.
