Some interesting stuff showing up on Netflix Instant. Was very excited to see DEADHEAD MILES (http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Deadhead-Miles/70154483?strackid=15d0101aca657a1b_0_srl&strkid=2006546329_0_0&trkid=222336#height393) on there. Sure it's full screen, but looks better than the bootlegs I've seen.

Here's a little list of "interesting" films(many of them not on DVD) that are streaming right now:

Great list, Brian! Hope you don't mind if I use some of these suggestions on my Psychotronic Netflix facebook page! One of these days I have to watch Fast Break, apparently.

I don't right now, but that's a good idea -- hooray, a project for the day!

Character limits will kind of force me to be less verbose. Though that may be preferred by some.

Dangit, Brian, you're doing my work for me! It's great -- I'd never heard of some of this stuff.

It looks like Paramount has taken a lot of their most prized cult titles that haven't had an HV release and just dumped them on Netflix with whatever master they've got. I watched GUNN the other day and it was with French main and end titles!

It's great this stuff is at least available to see in SOME FORM, but it would sure be nice to see these get decent dvd releases.

I suspect many of the m.i.a. on home video titles are showing up as streaming titles because of a some kind of legal loophole that counts streaming in the same family as a cable broadcast. A decent DVD sure would be great, but unless a third party licensee like Criterion can step in, we can probably only count on DVD-Rs from the various MOD programs cropping up in the wake of the Warner Archive.

You may be right. I also suspect Netflix's policy is to take whatever is given to them, quality-wise, so the studios don't have to incur remastering costs.

Thanks Paul! It's total give and take. I grabbed some from you for that list as well as the other volumes I'm working on now!

Yeah I think he may be right too. I also think it's a matter of the studios being will to take the hit on a per/view license when it comes to prohibitive music costs as opposed to a 5,000 or more run of dvds and what the licensing on that would cost them.
And you're right about Netflix taking whatever they can get quality-wise. That is unfortunate for sure. I really hope there are at least possible dvd-r releases based on how these titles perform on Instant, but I couldn't agree more about nice dvds. It's shame it seems doubtful that will happen.

THE LAWYER is another Paramount title never on home video, but now on Netflix instant. It is uncut, but full-frame. It looks just fine at 1.33 at least.

Is that film any good? Saw that it was on there, was curious about it. Hope more Parmount rarities crop up too.

I really like THE LAWYER. It's Barry Newman as a very brash attorney in a small Southwestern town representing a doctor accused of murdering his wife. I don't know what the box office was like for this R-rated mystery, but it was later adapted for television as the good series PETROCELLI, again starring Newman. It has a very TV-friendly cast and an intriguing RASHOMON-esque gimmick with various characters relating what may or may not have happened to the victim in flashback. If you're into Barry Newman or lurid courtroom dramas, THE LAWYER is an interesting watch.

Interesting.... GUNN was shown on the Drive In Classics channel up in Canada, don't recall it having French titles(!) but will double check.

Here's Vol. 3 of "Gems" on my blog. More stuff that's been on DVD here, but still good films:

I see they added The Keep, another much sought after Paramount title (haven't checked it to see what it looks like).

addendum: I did look at a few minutes, and it's a fairly nice 2:35 transfer.

I watched Demme's LAST EMBRACE a few days ago. That's on one of Brian's lists. I must say I thought it was a pretty awful affair, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't at least enjoy it. I'm not sure what was up with all of the POV shots. Roy Schieder is great as always, but Chris Walken has (like literally) ten seconds of embarrassingly bad screen time. Some fantastic use of locations.

I live for forgotten thrillers and dramas from that period, so I'm glad I saw it. I'm also really liking these lists!

Glad you're liking the lists Matthew! Thanks for checking them out!
Just posted a new one today. Many more common titles here, but still all interesting stuff:
http://rupertpupkinspeaks.blogspot.com/2010/11/netflix-instant-gems-vol-4.html

That's a fair critique of LAST EMBRACE btw, I can see how you might now be blown away by it. As far as rarer Demme goes, I think I like CITIZEN'S BAND a little more(now on Instant, it's on the new list!).

Good eye, yeah I was excited that it's a widescreen transfer. Kudos to Netflix on that! I have it on the latest list.

If people are still interested, here are Vols 6 & 7 of my Netflix Instant "Gems". Vol.7 is just a bunch of bad(junk) movies, 6 has some good stuff though...

Just FYI - They now have BRIDE OF FRANKENSTIEN, SON OF FRANKENSTEIN and WEREWOLF OF LONDON up in HD streams. They look good, too! :)

Some of these early Universal Horrors are starting to pop up in the TCM schedules, too.

Wonder if there's been any remastering work done with possible BR releases in mind?

Wayne Schmidt

I think a lot of them played the dear departed MonstersHD as well. But these should all be new versions since previous broadcasts were off tapes that got turned into molten slag with their vault fire.
As far as BD release I'd be surprised if that was the case. It would be great if they offered a box ala the Hammers of blu-ray versions, though.

Bride of Frankenstein has never been properly presented, as far as I can tell. The framing is always off, and detail doesn't seem as strong as it could be. I'd LOVE to see it get a remastering for BD.

Wayne Schmidt

It looks pretty good here. This is only 720P, and all the Universal horrors have been beaten to death through the years (the price of being a popular picture! The Inner Sanctum movies all look pristine :D) so you're never going to get a tremendous amount of detail. But these show definite improvement from what's been available up to now. I'd certainly pop for them on BD if they were attractively priced.

I bet Spider Woman Strikes Again, House of Horrors and Mystery of the Blue Room would all look superb, then! :D

I really hope the 30s titles get issued on BD.
