View Full Version : Your All Time Favorite Genre Stars

Daniel S.S.

They might be great actors they might be goofballs. Often they're beautiful, occasionally they're tragic. Sometimes they're just pleasingly familiar faces and voices from our youth. Whatever the reason, they are our favorite genre stars (horror, SF, action, westerns, erotic, etc.) and we love watching them.

So go nuts, and why restrict yourself to a number? As many or few as you'd like.

As for me,

The Ladies:

Rosalba Neri
Erika Blanc
Marianna Hill
Lynn Lowry
Valerie Leon
Margaret Markov
Lynne Frederick
Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith
Jennifer Rubin
Milla Jovovich
Kate Beckinsale

The Gents:

Robert Quarry
Michael Pataki
Richard Carlson
Christopher Lee
Peter Cushing
Boris Karloff
Ralph Bates
Russell Johnson
Peter Fonda
Andrew Prine
John Agar
Klaus Kinski
Paul Naschy

I'm reserving the right to edit this list by adding more names which I will surely remember later on.

Lynn Lowry

If you turned this into a poll, I bet she would come damn close to winning. She'd get my vote.

As for actors, there are too many. But I'll just say that I've sat through a lot of stuff that I otherwise wouldn't have bothered with in a million years if it wasn't for one thing: the endearing badassness of Mr. Wings Hauser.

Mike Paine

Edwige French, David Warbeck, Christopher George, Lynn Lowry,Paul Naschy, Christina Lindberg, Ian mcculoch, Vincent Price, Franco Nero

I feel like that's kind of a generic list but at 6:30 in the morning its all I got. I'm sure ill edit more in there as the day progresses and I have more coffee.

As far as a poll, I wasn't necessarily looking to make it about a competition and we have a lot of "top ten" lists already, so I didn't want to get hung up on an arbitrary number. I guess that makes it a little harder for some where I was trying to make it easier by not having to sacrifice someone you love just to stay within a number.

I had Lynn Lowry in mind though, when I thought of this (and was surprised nothing similar came up in a search) having just watched The Crazies.

I thought it would be cool to see the variety of actors people get excited over.

Y'all got some big lists.

Mine starts and ends with Michael Ironside.
Add some Ian McCulloch and Ernest Borgnine (YES, Ernest Borgnine) in there if you must. Maybe Peter Cushing as well.

I suppose there are a lot of genre actors I enjoy watching, but I can't think of too many who would prompt me to watch a film solely because they're in it, which is the case with Michael Ironside. Go figure.

I could make a long list but Arnold Schwarzenegger would sit so high on that list, why bother. His best role is Dutch in Predator. I even enjoyed him as Dr. Freeze. "Chill Out"

Honorable Mention: Jason Statham

KURT FUCKING RUSSELL

I recently picked up LOVE AMERICAN STYLE Season 1 Volume 2, not because I was blown away by Volume 1, but because of the guest stars. Paul Lynde, Julie Newmar, Burt Reynolds, Bob Denver, Clint Howard, PHYLLIS DAVIS, Adam West, Jim Backus, Meredith MacRae, Tom Bosley and Kurt Fucking Russell.

Kurt Fucking Russell does make everything better!

That s quite the list list for volume 2, i must admit.

Adam West!!

I have always thought it would be glorious for Adam West and William Shatner to join forces for a bit of fromage heaven.

Nevermind de Niro and Pacino in Heat- a single shared scene between the two aformentioned masters of the off kilter line delivery would be amazing one would have to think!

Nice!!

Rosanne Katon

She's the one I've been trying to remember! Sometime around, I think, the mid-to-late '80s, she and two other female genre stars were on a New York area talk show. Might have been the Richard Bey show. I wish to hell I could remember more details. Rosanne had a very sweet disposition, though. She demonstrated her hardass, womens' prison voice and face and it was a cute contrast to her surprisingly bubbly demeanor.

Harry Dean Stanton

Absofreakinlutely. Has anyone mentioned M. Emmet Walsh yet? Probably the best thing I've ever heard from Roger Ebert was the Stanton-Walsh rule-no movie featuring either one of these guys can be all that bad. One thing worth noting about Walsh is that he has to be the most surprising go-to-guy for scenes that call for full frontal nudity. I know I'm setting myself up for some big time ridicule with that comment, but of course it's not the nudity itself that I like...the boldness has to be appreciated. Just one of his many great qualities.

One other name I have to enter as a favorite of mine: Yaphet Kotto

Is that his real nickname or did you make that up? That's hilarious! :)

Just saw HDS yesterday in CISCO PIKE again for the millionth time. He ALMOST steals that movie despite the amazing cast he is surrounded by.

Generally my rule of thumb when determining if someone is really an actor or not is if they will do full nudity. Playing a stripper but won't do nudity? YOU ARE NOT AN ACTOR.

Oh, hell yeah! Absolutely, Yaphet Kotto. I thought I put him on my list. He cracks me up in MIDNIGHT RUN as Alonzo Moseley and he is fantastic as Parker in ALIEN. Love that story that Ridley tells about Kotto trying to get out of being killed by the alien, saying, "No alien's gonna kill me!" Also, his final scene in BLUE COLLAR is absolutely devastating.

And, yes, Walsh definitely deserves props for not being afraid to shed his threads in the name of his craft (these douchebag young Hollywood prettyboys and starlets who hide behind a "merkin" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merkin) are a joke). It's a powerful, cathartic moment when Hoffman "de-pantses" Walsh in STRAIGHT TIME and when Woods interrupts Walsh and Susan Tyrrell in FAST-WALKING, it's a pretty f'in hilarious moment.

More's the pity.

I was thinking more along the lines of "willingness."

Troy Howarth
11-14-2010, 05:55 PM
Perhaps I'm being too literal, but it seems to me this is too much of a generalization. Not all actors are cut out for that kind of thing. If your point is that the actor should be willing to go all the way with regards to the role they're playing, I can get behind that. But to say that all actors should be willing to strip for the camera... no, I'm sorry, can't agree there. :)

I was kidding on the square. It was a ridiculous comment to make, and yet, I mostly really mean it. I like actors who are willing to get nekkid for no particular reason, like Kevin Bacon in HOLLOW MAN or Kevin Bacon in WILD THINGS. I don't care if you are Edwidge Fenech or Kathy Bates, be prepared to drop 'em. These dumb young'uns nowadays think that if they get naked in a movie they won't be taken seriously, so they save it for their leaked homemade porn tapes. Actually, I don't take them seriously BECAUSE they won't whip it out.

I'm basically with you. I mean, I can understand actors having issues with being self conscious. I can understand them passing on a role because of nudity, etc. That doesn't bother me. But yes, if you decide to play a role wherein you're expected to be naked, and then act like you're too good to do that or whatever, that is BS.

I kinda wish some actors like Gerard Derpardieu would keep their clothes ON, but I certainly agree, especially with the young actresses today. What really annoys me is the gratutious non-nudity--the non-nude stripping scenes, the non-nude shower scenes, the non-nude sex scenes etc. Just don't do these roles if you're not going to do them right.

I forgot to mention two of my favorite Brit actors--Oliver Reed and Michael Caine.
