Knew that Paul Reubens had been trying to secure backing for a feature-length version of Saturday morning show PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE, but the article below sez the new film will be in the same vein as PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE:

Some sources say Apatow is producing, others say directing, all agree that he is helping "develop" the project with Reubens.

One article said it's going to be a Big Adventure sequel. The return of Pee Wee to the big screen could be a disaster, but his return is most welcome.

Dammit, I can't remember where right offhand, but I read an interview with Paul Rust just today, and he seems to have a good grasp on the character and the sensibility of PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE. He even nails what I think makes that movie particularly special -- that everyone seems to accept Pee-Wee as a pretty normal guy in this weird universe that they all inhabit. Nobody treats him like some kind of annoying weirdo. He even says that if he could write for any character from the universe, it would be Amazing Larry and that it would be cool if they could bring Amazing Larry into this movie. And I've always loved the fact that the movie contains a character that serves no real purpose named Amazing Larry, so I'm pretty damn psyched.

I hope he's jackin' to some porn in a theater in this movie. That'd be interesting.

I'm looking forward to it. Big fan. In the Pee-Wee's Big Adventure DVD there are deleted scenes that introduce Amazing Larry's character, but it does work without the intro -- just a wacky nonsequitor Amazing Larry appearance. I'd love to see more of the character too.

I love Pee Wee but have not been very impressed with Apatow.

I wouldn't mind a new Pee Wee film... I'm not big on Apatow, but then I'm not a Tim Burton fan, either - and I like the one he directed.

Well, keep in mind that Apatow's just producing, based on meeting with Pee-Wee during the LA run of "The Pee-Wee Herman Show" revival. He won't be writing (and probably not directing, though a director hasn't been chosen). I'm an Apatow fan overall, but agree that his sensibility as a writer in particular seems to be pretty foreign to the Pee-Wee universe.

I'm more excited about Pee Wee's other big upcoming movie:

Thanks for clearing that up for me. :) Also, I spoke a little too soon. I did enjoy "Superbad"! :p

Paul Reubens and Cassandra Peterson are friends. She was one of the bikers in Big Adventure. I've met them both and told them it would great to have a "Pee Wee Meets Elvira" movie in the style of the old Universal Abbott and Costello Meets... films. Maybe one day.
