Gott im Himmel! I haven't watched DER KOMMISSAR for more years than I care to remember!! Lately, I've been watching episodes of DER ALTE which I taped off 3Sat and maybe it's time for a re-visit to DER KOMMISSAR. How long did run for and is it all out on DVD?

Jack, best German cop show ever imho, period. Produced between 1968 and 1975 running 97 episodes, all the while remaining true to its monochrome look when most other TV had long switched to colour. DERRICK and DER ALTE would be either 2nd or 3rd with me, depends a bit on the moment though usually I have DERRICK 2nd because of all those early classic episodes. The Harry Klein character's a crossover anyway. All three shows share having countless famous faces guesting like Anton Diffring, Horst Frank, Curd Jürgens, Werner Pochath, Heinz Bennent, Lilli Palmer or Hans Caninenberg. And Horst Tappert and Siegfried Lowitz before they became Derrick and Köster, respectively. There'll be four sets, next one in August, then November and February. The only episode that won't be included, is the 1974 one (''Das Goldener Pflaster'') where Turkey complained it stereotyped their people and portrayed them in rags and plot leading to the Turkish embassy. It's been blocked ever since alas by ZDF's wimpy executives. Series, at least to me, always evoked memories of the Edgar Wallace krimis thanks to the atmospheric photography and plenty of creepiness crime with odd old ladies, pretty young things and wide-eyed blank staring corpses. Really deserves an international release, a few tasters here.

Eric, I really like SUMMERTIME KILLER! That's actually why I bought this Japanese VHS as I already have the DVD from Thailand (there's also a reg. 1 DVD now). I wrote a little about the film here:

http://enlejemordersertilbage.blogspot.com/search/label/Summertime%20killer

Chris Mitchum and Olivia Hussey also (later) starred together in another movie called H-BOMB:

You're welcome. I asked Jonathan about DER KOMMISSAR cos I don't have this set and I'm afraid I don't know if it's subtitled. It would be nice but somehow I doubt it.

The DVDs unfortunately have no subs or any English friendliness to them, so it'll depend on one's German to get much out of it. In general should have an appeal to giallo fans too, so a subtiled international release would be welcomed perhaps any interested company might look into that. Last disc in the set has all the extras, there's a great fan site for it www.kommissar-keller.de with more info and many more pics. Since there's been much debate about it lately, ZDF now blocked the Turkish episode entirely where before you could apparently purchase it from them with no trouble, it has never been repeated on TV. I never got around to it myself although I'm sure there's channels one can now get it through as I intend to explore, but a shame the releases won't be quite complete this time. The famous big band theme tune's below, usually blasting out over the titles/discovery of a dead body and at the end when the killer's led away, really cool stuff.

A SERIOUS SHOCK! YES MADAM! (HK laserdisc)
aka Yes Madam '92: A Serious Shock aka Death Triangle. Never released on DVD. This is a beaut! You don't find these lying around in baring bins anywhere. Pretty and usually do-gooder Moon Lee is a truly bad guy (her only bad guy role?? I think so!) and is up against Cynthia Khan and Yukari Oshima. Great flick!!

You can no longer use the 10-15-20% off coupons for the 50% off Criterion dvds/blu-rays at barnesandnoble.com. Thankfully I ordered what I wanted yesterday and was able to use the extra 15% off.

Coupons are still working in-store, though, so if you have a printable coupon you are in luck.

Joel S.
07-14-2010, 09:11 AM
I got away with the coupons (placed my orders as soon as the sale went live on the 12th using 20% coupons), thankfully, because I pretty much spent my last free $ on this sale .. didn't even go overboard or anything - I've just been pissing away money left and right on movies !!

anyway , I got
#1 Rossellini War Trilogy / Jigoku
#2 Sisters / Ikiru / Pickpocket
#3 Red Desert / Paris Texas

hard to believe my Criterion selection at home is now hovering around 70 titles.. insane. I went 'ape shit' last year with the sale , I got a membership and was using Bing and coupons and spent a couple hundred on a bunch of titles. This year cost me around $140 or so I guess. NYS sales tax totally sucks. I have been thinking about getting those Rosellini Renaissance movies before the sale ends but I'm not too sure...

Earlier this week:

- WB Film Noir Collection Vol. 5.

I hope too much WB Noir doesn't end up on their DVD-R archive, I prefer 8 movies, on pressed DVD's, for $37 USD. :) I hope for a Vol. 6

Heavy Metal. Which surprises me because whenever you see it in a store(it's rare to find there) it goes around $20+,but I found it at Walmart for eight duckits. Sure you can find it easy and cheap online, but my cash is going to harder to find titles offhand.

Look Around You - Season 1

Damn, I forgot about Look Around You on dvd! I'll have to check tomorrow when I head over to get the two Corman's as well. The place down the road from me was apparently one of the stores that got those 2 in last week, but I didn't get to check.

When I go to the nearest B&N (45 min away, but I'll be in that area anyway) on Friday, the Criterion that I'm looking for is RED DESERT on blu. I'm not intending to get carried away with this sale, but you know how it gets...:D

I should just order online more. I tend to have more self-control when I do.

LOOK AROUND YOU is a weird little show that first perplexed me when i put in the dvd, but found myself enjoying it quite a bit.

Nice! As of this very minute, I'm about to drop a perc, and give it a spin.

Double nice! Speaking of Antonioni, I want to see Monica Vitti in 1080.

Yeah, that's pretty much all I do. I prefer to use my debit, but even then the sky's the limit. Please keep in mind that I'm not married, nor will I ever be. I work hard so I can enjoy nice things, and live comfortably... not so that someone else can. :)

Hey Shane, thanks for inadvertantly alerting me to LOOK AROUND YOU. I just did a blind-buy from Amazon. I took a peek at epguides.com and it totally looks up my alley.

From Best Buy (shudder) today I got its exlusive release of PAUL MCCARTNEY GOOD EVENING NEW YORK CITY that includes the complete performance atop the Ed Sullivan Theater marquee.
