I plan traveling to NYC in the following weeks, and would like to know if there any good "film places" in NYC.
By "film places", I mean the best cinemas in NYC, the best DVD stores, CULT stores, Horror stores, etc....

Get youself over to The Ziegfeld. Midtown area. Hopefully they'll be running a good film. Sit about 16/18 rows back dead center. One of the best movie theater experiecnes you'll ever have.
And check out the Ziegfeld girls in the posters on the way up the escalator.

Thanks. I can't seem to find any info on the Ziegfeld, though.
Any other thoughts?

The Ziegfeld, where a great many of the Hollywood premieres in NYC are held:
The picture and sound quality there is usually as good as it gets. Right now, it's Monsters Vs Aliens 3D, then The Soloist late next month and Star Trek in early May.
You might prefer the arthouse/revival offerings over at the Film Forum or the Landmark Sunshine, both downtown. I can also recommend The Paris and the Anthology Film Archives. The Angelika is pretty cool for socializing in their cafe lobby and they usually have impressive film offerings, but the smallish cinemas are underground right up against the rumbling subway.
For DVD shopping, go to the compromised but still impressive Kim's Video, on 1st Ave between St Marks (basically east 8th St) and east 7th Street. Lots of cult, horror, and foreign cinema, plus a really impressive used DVD selection.
Forbidden Planet on Broadway and 13th will take care of your geek merchandise needs. Toy Tokyo downtown on 2nd ave is fun if you like oddball US and Japanese toys. Jim Hanley's Universe is pretty comprehensive on the comics front.

The Ziegfeld is usually reliable for their first run films, but I've found their presentation of classic stuff when they do it to be rather disappointing. I would definitely sit more about 1/3 back from the screen than 16 rows.
It's a Clearview cinema, so you can expect a Clearview presentation.
Go to MoMA, Walter Reade Theater, the Paris Theater, Angelika, then hop a PATH train to Jersey City and check out the Loew's Jersey just for the movie palace experience.
Avoid the Film Forum like the plague. Smarmy audiences, bad projection, small screen, smelly theater. Good programming does not make up for this.
