View Full Version : The White Warrior

I just picked up THE WHITE WARRIOR for $5.99 on DVD and was wondering if any of you had seen it. It was directed by Riccardo Freda and photographed by Mario Bava, two of my fave Italian directors. It isn't horror, but I'd take a film from these two guys in almost any genre. So, what do you guys who have seen it think about it?

is it the VCI disc you picked up?

I haven't seen it, but I heard the DVD uses a pretty crappy (fullscreen) transfer. I hope I'm wrong about this.

No, it's not the VCI version, which I hear is better, but rather the Platinum. This is definitely full frame, and the colors are faded pretty badly.

I believe VCI's THE WHITE WARRIOR dvd is widescreen.

I have the VCI version and it looks GOOD IN WIDESCREEN and is the only way to see this film. The transfer is anamorphic, but a little lacking. But hey, at that price, who's complaining. It was also flagged wrong and will appear "squished" on non- 16X9 TVs - I don't know if VCI corrected this pressing error yet.

Chris- I don't know if you've watched THE WHITE WARRIOR yet or not, but go in with low expectations. It's not a great peplum but it can be fun. I watched Sinister Cinema's tape of it years ago and was a bit let down. It's only OK.
Now, if we could only get a good copy of Bava's ERIK THE CONQUORER I'd be a happy man!

Are there any copies of "Erik the Conqueror" out there? DVD or VHS? I would love to see this movie.

ERIK THE CONQUEROR was released in American by AIP, so I'd imagine MGM now owns the rights. Very good film, btw.

I've started releasing their viking pictures, so maybe ERIK isn't far behind. I also wish they'd release the American versions of BLACK SUNDAY, THE EVIL EYE, and BLACK SABBATH, perhaps in a collection for a cheap retail, just so we Bava completists could have Bava on DVD in every aspect, for comparison purposes.
I won't expect much from THE WHITE WARRIOR, and if I find the VCI copy somewhere, I'll definitely upgrade.

What are some Freda films to be recommanded?
