I received "Behind the Pink Curtain" (in hardcover) a couple of weeks ago and am reasonably impressed with it.

It is thorough and has a good selection of stills and poster reproductions.

Although it is pretty dismissive of some of my favorites (the "Rapeman" series, for example) and overly judgmental at times "(Star of David - Beauty Hunting"), it is pretty exhaustive.

Wakamatsu gets plenty of ink, as does Takahisa Zeze (a filmmaker whose films I'm not really into).

Personally, I would have preferred a much heavier emphasis on the sleazier, more extreme aspects of the "pink" genre, but that's a personal beef.

Strangely, I could find no mention of "Captured for Sex 2", surely one of the most inflammatory entries in the genre.

Writer Jasper Sharp is to be applauded for a much-needed tome.

Content-wise, I still prefer Thomas Weisser's "The Sex Films", but this book, being a very different beast, is excellent in its own right.

I am going to get this a little nearer to Christmas.....although, when you mention that he doesnt really delve into the sleazier more extreme aspects I am a little disappointed......

I hope he gets around to making a follow up that discusses the darker, sleazier, extreme movies...because these are the most unknown to most people outside of Japan..and therefore the most interesting..

Yeah, a book on the darker subjects in new japanese adult industry would be awesome. They sure have a LOT of fetishes that get fullfilled over there. In general we need more literature on extreme porn IMO.

Ultimately, a writer is only going to write at length about the films they are passionate about (and that is their right).

I see enormous value and artistry in films like BEAUTIFUL GIRL HUNTING, ASSAULT - JACK THE RIPPER, RAPING!, BEAUTIFUL TEACHER IN TORTURE HELL, CAPTURED FOR SEX 2, TATTOOED FLOWER VASE and its ilk, but that's me (and several others, I'm sure).

Weisser's THE SEX FILMS is a supreme example of where Weisser's passions lie, so I'm more in his camp than in Jasper Sharp's camp.

Sharp's book is more thorough, however, in covering the broader industry.

The Japanese "fetish" market lies beyond the definition of "pink", which is why it isn't covered in BEYOND THE PINK CURTAIN.

Another book embracing companies such as Cinemagic, Dogma, Aroma, etc. is called for.

Behind the opening credits for "Girl Boss Blues: Queen Bee's Counterattack" they show the Athens gang leaving a movie theater. I fugured they would be watching some Toei product. Wrong. The one poster I could make out was for a film that translates to either "Girl Body Pollution" or "Booty Polution" (depending on translation) directed by Tetsuya Ogawa (http://www.jmdb.ne.jp/person/p0174890.htm) (translation (http://74.125.93.104/translate_c?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www.jmdb.ne.jp/person/p0174890.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%25E5%25A5%25B3%25E4%25BD%2593%25E5%2 585%25AC%25E5%25AE%25B3%2Bsite:www.jmdb.ne.jp%26hl %3Den%26sa%3DG&usg=ALkJrhg8cV6K-FJQGbZQ4LKAi6RPImjtAQ)).

Ha, there was definitely something going on far beneath Nikkatsu in the Japanese smut world.

Behind The Pink Curtain is coming out in paperback some time in November. I'll have it on my Christmas wish list.

I have this book its a great read although i do agree it would have been nice if it had touched on the more extreme stuff such as Rape Man. But overall it is a fantastic piece of work. I am really looking forward to discovering more about this genre cant wait for the Pink Eigu releases when they appear.

The Rapeman is actually a romantic comedy.

The RAPEMAN series have gotten an extremely bad (and undeserved) reputation simply from the name and the rather extreme (I heard) original manga)..

The movies themselves play out like a detective story with a lot of humour thrown in...the nastiness you are expecting never appears...Even when he is "interrogating" his suspects..it is no worse than a rather tame CAT 3 movie from HK......similar in fact to the HANZO THE RAZOR movies in his techniques!!....

If they had named it something else I am sure it wouldnt have lifted many eyebrows!!..The stories themselves are pretty interesting andf well tought out and the acting is rather good on the whole...

Now if you want to talk extreme go watch SQUIRMFEST or the genki pics..THIS ONE should NOT be lumped in with those!

I agree that RAPEMAN is unfairly maligned.

It is a very touching series (the relationship between Uncle and his nephew is sweet) that is totally different in tone to the RAPEMAN manga.

I have seen 1-6 and EDO RAPEMAN (who looks like Batman) and the quality improves throughout the series.

As you probably know, the actor playing Rapeman/Nephew/School Teacher took his own life, thus ending the series.

The score is very memorable.

Yes, they have been released in glorious remastered DVD versions in Japan (no english subs though..but if you have the ol dBootleg tapes (like me) you can match them up!!!)

They also have ANIME version..and I think there was a sepeerate series whish dealt with a RAPEMAN in samurai times...:D

I think a fair number of the Rapeman films are up on CG.

My copy of this was on my kitchen table when I arrived home from O/S..It's a great looking book, and I'm a total virgin to this type of genre, besides films like AUDITION (which isn't Pinku) and that crummy IKU movie...

I know Rapeman from the Steve Albini band, but still haven't seen the manga or the films!

Though I have little doubt the genre will blow me a new arsehole, just to help unblock my guts of all those contemporary American genre films....LOL!

The first four of the Japanese DVD's have had subs added to them and are available on ADC (I presume the ones on CG are also sourced from these). I watched the first couple, but they weren't really my thing. Mildly amusing, but very repetetive and not anywhere near extreme enough to hold my interest! I did like the weird little fat uncle character though...

Sounds good enough to be worth buying. I'll get any reference books on the genre I can find, become a huge interest of mine over the past 2 years.

Aaron, you have to see Sex & Fury, Female Yakuza Tale, Terrifying Girls' School: Lynch Law Classroom, Assault! Jack the Ripper and Beautiful Girl Hunter immediately!:D

Aaron, you have to see Sex & Fury, Female Yakuza Tale, Terrifying Girls' School: Lynch Law Classroom

I've seen all three of these, and loved them all..Terrifying Girls Classroom is the one where the girl has an abortion in the opening scene on something? Kinda like a Russ Meyer movie on PCP? but the girls don't have bits tits and booties..But yeah, all great stuff!

Assault! Jack the Ripper and Beautiful Girl Hunter immediately!:D

Yeah my curiosity has piqued on these two MM titles, if you could only choose one over the other, which would it be?

Randy Thomas G

I'd say Beautiful Girl Hunter.

Both Assault Jack The Ripper and Beautiful Girl Hunter are amongst the best of their kind...

sorry its a choice b/w WATCHER IN THE ATTIC & ASSAULT : JACK THE RIPPER, i'll hafta source BEAUTIFUL GIRL HUNTER aka STAR OF DAVID elsewhere...

Mikko Koivisto

Star of David is coming from Discotek (probably sometime early 2009) remastered and with a Suzuki commentary (that's not on the Geneon dvd).

I always found Assault! Jack the Ripper a bit over-rated. It has a lot of potential, but misses half of the time. It's still a good film, but Rape! 13th Hour actually hits the target better.

Watcher in the Attic is good, too, but not as good as She Beast Market. And nowhere near as good as Tanaka's masterpiece Beauty's Exotic Dance: Torture. Tanaka's Abe Sada film on the other hand is very over-rated (although I might have enjoyed it a tiny bit more if the TV print wasn't so beaten up...)

There are seven movies in the The Rapeman (The Reipuman) live-action series, and two in the Oedo Rapeman / The Rape-Man of Edo (‘edo Reipuman) live-action series - none of which, incidentally, are pink films. ("Oedo Rapeman" is the international sales title of ‘edo Reipuman; "The Rape-Man of Edo" is that movie's English title in Japan.) Hiroyuki Okita played Rapeman in all nine of those movies.

Here's a description of Oedo Rapeman from the website of the international sales agent for that movie, GAGA Communications: "It's the Edo period. When even the Shogunate authority are unable to deal with a terrible crime, it is the Rapeman who metes out punishment in the form of rape. Based on the popular series 'The Rapeman.' Starring Hiroyuki Okita."

GAGA Communications: Oedo Rapeman (http://www.gaga.co.jp/intl/library/?genre=6) (12th listing)

JMDb: Hiroyuki Okita (http://www.jmdb.ne.jp/person/p0051750.htm)

I still have the TWO NUNS album on vinyl. One of my favourite late 80's post-punk records, esp for the fantastic ZZ Top cover!

Did everyone order this direct from FAB Press? They have it cheaper on Amazon UK but it says there is a wait time of 1 - 3 weeks which in my experience can sometimes mean never....

Mark Savage

Yes, ordered from FAB Press about two months prior to street date.

It's about £10 cheaper on Amazon so I'll give it a go and if nothing arrives I'll just use FAB.

A bootleg release of The Rapeman series is being marketed as "The Japanese Dexter".
