An interesting and terrific film by Seijun Suzuki that deals with the aftermath of the war(WW2), and how the main characters are affected. Gate of Flesh has a strong performance by Suzuki's lead actor, and some memorable images. In the style of Godard, and Walsh especially in the final scene.

One powerful and disturbing image is the slaughter of the cow by Jo Shishido's character. Jo Shishido shows in this film why he was in the 1960s the b-movie equvlent of Toshiro Mifune.

I bought the Pagan release of GATE OF FLESH but this is the only PAL DVD that will not play properly on either my Cyberhome or my computer. Picture actually seems to go into slo-mo when there is motion. I was pissed because I really like the other Suzuki that I've seen--TOKYO DRIFTER and BRANDED TO KILL.

The Gate of Flesh I have is the Home Vision VHS.

I saw Gate of Flesh this weekend, and was amazed by a couple of things. One, the contrast between the film's bleak outlook, and the colorful look of the film. Two, the innovative style of the film and the representation of the four prostitutes by a different color(red, green, white, and purple). Forceful powerful film with an animal slaughter scene that will turn off some.

Since the last post almost four years ago, I've gotten the Criterion DVD and the film I still like as much as then. Anybody knows what the song is that plays off and on in the film(you also hear it in the Sonny Chiba film, Killing Machine).

Not sure on the music, but I agree, the CC disc is a keeper. Great transfer and a really well made film. I'd love to see them handle more of his work in the future.

I've yet to see this one although I've liked everything else I've seen from Suzuki so I'm sure it will be good. This reminds me that I should get out there and rent it. :)
