This is a cakewalk for me, now I love Jerry Reed and "Amos Moses" is pure swamp funk but it just can't hold a candle to Roger Miller. I probably listen to the best of Roger Miller more than any other cd I own, there was a period of about 6 months where it was the only cd I listened to in my car and there's a reason for that. Hell, just listen to the shit he wrote.

King Of The Road
Dang Me
One Dyin' and a Buryin' (that's one dark song)
Do-Wacka-Do

I don't even have to think about this one. Jerry Reed, Jerry Reed, Jerry Reed.

The Alabama Wildman rules eternal. Those who say otherwise might find themselves on the business end of a sawed-off shotgun.

Y'think so Don? I mean I love Jerry Reed and all, but Roger Miller is just too fucking cool

Don Guarisco

Miller is cool, and did autobiographical "growin' up" songs like no other. But Reed is one of the most soulful voices in C&W, a brilliant guitarist, a great (and sometimes daringly experimental) songwriter and one hell of an actor, too.

In other words, the man has everything. I can only stand back and look on in awe.

Jerry Reed.

Gotta go with Miller on this one, though I should give it to Reed on pickin' skills alone, but the hell with it. Rog had Thumbs Carlile, he wrote "Invitation to the Blues" (one of the top country shuffle tunes, and one of the top 5 Ray Price recordings, IMO), and had just about the saddest voice ever.

However.........

EASTBOUND AND DOWN is where Thin Lizzy meets Waylon, gotta give ol' Jerry that.

I gotta take Miller for sheer talent.

Roger Miller.

While Jerry Reed has had his moments, Roger Miller was the complete package - a gifted songwriter, a solid singer, and a good showman. Not to slight Jerry Reed altogether, but c'mon, should these two even be compared in the same sentence?

Miller OWNS Reed with "King of The Road" alone. Not to mention "Dang Me", which he wrote on a whim, on the spur of the moment. Reed's cool, but Roger Miller he ain't. Miller could take a song, mould it into something great, and perform it in his own inimitable way. Reed's a talent in his own right, but when I think of him, I think of a more "country novelty" type vibe. Not to say that he's not good at it, but he's nowhere near Miller's calibre. In fact, few were. I'll bet if you were to ask some of the old school Nashville stars, they'd sing Miller's praises :D

It's just sad he's since passed away - he was a great talent. :(

YES, THEY SHOULD!!! GODDAMNIT!!!

You know, you don't have to knock one to argue in favor of the other, Mr. Character Assassinator. You can vote Roger Miller if you want but never, ever denigrate the Guitar Man.

Blah blah blah, let's discuss why all you can find for Roger Miller are Best Ofs, 1 boxset and a Bear Family collection of the early years.

Hahahaha!!! Just callin' 'em as I see 'em, Don. Reed's got his niche, but he's no Miller! I mean, I like Reed's rendition of "Amos Moses" as much as the next person, but to compare him to Miller? "Guitar Man" MY ASS!!!! :D

Hahaha! Sorry, man! Far be it from me to be uncivil! :D All in good fun!

Just not a Reed fan's all. Especially when you put him up against Miller. Now if you put him up against someone like Toby Keith, well, we've got a clear winner - Reed would mop the floor with him!

I agree one-hundred percent with Sweet Donnie G. That was beautiful stuff.

Jerry Reed is one of the most unique guitar players on this planet. His playing style and songwriting cannot be duplicated - only imitated. IMHO, he's the Eddie Van Halen of country guitar. He's not the fastest and not the most technical; however, his style is imitated by many but nobody sounds quite like him (like Ed). Also, Jerry's "The Claw" is comparable to Ed's "Eruption". Nobody had done anything before either that sounds quite like them.

He's done so many styles: country, pop, swamp, dixieland, and occassional experimental/psych tunes.

I love Roger Miller's voice but for me Jerry Reed is the total package, son...

He's the best.

I'm sorry Jonathan, but Roger has written 700 songs including "Little Green Apples" and "Dang Me". Granted, he was fucked outta his skull when he wrote "Dang Me"...as Johnny Cash tells it, he was in a car with Roger driving through the desert and Roger told him to pull over and ran behind a rock to write the song.

In all honesty, I will concede that Roger is the better lyricist. His vocal style is quite unique. He's one of the best.

I've never heard that Johnny Cash story before but I knew RM had his demons. I guess that song had to come out.

Great idea for a poll! :)
