View Full Version : Rude moviegoers come in all ages...

Tonight, I went to see a movie at a local theater and had to deal with some rude patrons. Within the first few minutes of the movie, it was clear they had picked the wrong movie and didn't like it... so they felt free to sit and jabber through it. I tried everything - dirty looks, shushing and even loudly saying "please be quiet" but these magpies kept chattering throughout the movie. No matter what I said or did, they were completely indifferent and kept indulging themselves. One of them even made some kind of snapping, clicking noise with a pen throughout the movie to show his/her boredom with the film.

Experiences like this are not unheard of, especially in today's manners-free era, but the big shocker is that this group of gabby moviegoers were all adults! I'm talking senior citizen, member-of-AARP age grownups.

I'd expect this kind of nonsense from little kids or teens but fully-grown adults should know better. After the movie, I drove by them as they were wishing each other good night and complaining incessantly about the movie. I told them that not liking a movie doesn't give them the right to talk through the whole thing. Most were dumbstruck and one offered a feeble "sorry." I just drove off.

I guess the moral of the story is stupidity knows no age limit. Anybody else have bad movie theater experiences with old farts?

Well Don, you live in Florida and it's full of rudeass dumb old people.

By the by, what did you see?

A quick thrust of your thumb to his throat would have solved the problem. Senior citizens go down real easy if they can't breathe correctly.

PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER. Even factoring in the annoyance factor of the old farts, I still had a great time watching it.

i encountered trouble once with senior citizens. a group was already in the theater chatting somewhat loudly, then their friends showed up about 30 mins into the film, yelling in the theater looking for their friends!! when they found them, they started talking out loud nonstop. that was it and we left the theater. fortunately we got a refund that night.

I went and saw a movie a while ago, can't remember the name....Andie McDowell, Andy Garcia, something about scalpers...anyway, it was during a break in a split shift, so i really had no choice in what to watch. 3 people in the theatre, myself and 2 older ladies who came in right before the film and sat DIRECTLY BEHIND ME. Everything was fine until a couple of characters in the film started swearing, and it started this huge moral conversation behind me, which mostly included things like, "Why do people have to talk like that? Remember, people didn't always talk like that" and so on and so-forth. I don't remember exactly what I said to them, though i'm sure it should've been "Get the fuck out of here you old bastids" but i think that i made a comment about the movie rating clearly stating that there was profanity in the film.

Wow. What a lame story, huh?

As if Fred's initial comment wasn't funny enough, this one had me rolling on the floor. Funniest thing about it is the absurdity. How can a boner be soft? If it were soft it wouldn't be a boner. Thanks guys, I haven't laughed so hard since, well.. since I watched that spidey clip about two minutes ago. It's indeed been a jolly good time all round at maniacs today!

I was going to say the same thing. Senior Citizens deserve no special treatment just because they've lived long enough to become leaches on society. I find the same behavior in the poker world. Aside from Doyle Brunson, most seniors are the worst behaved I've encountered.

Wow. Tough room for the senior citizens. I kind of respect them myself. Maybe it's the way I was raised. Hope you guys never get old.

I think you're overreacting, Alex. This thread was designed for blowing off steam and you shouldn't be taking this stuff to heart (no need to be condescending, either).

I was also raised to respect my elders and still do in most cases. That said, I'm old enough to understand that some people don't get wiser as they get older. Respect should be something you earn, not something you automatically receive when you reach a certain age.

And if you can't show respect for others, particularly in a social situation like moviegoing, then you don't deserve any at all.

Don summed it up perfectly, I was raised to respect my elders as well and I've always been good about saying "sir", "ma'am", "please" and "thank you" but some people just don't have any damn manners regardless of age.

Alex E.
01-08-2007, 04:47 PM
I do agree with your main point, Don, disrespect from any age category should not be tolerated. Perhaps I went overboard by talking down to people, and for that, I do apologize. It's just the "Leeches on society" comment was a bit too much for me to take.

Don Guarisco

That's okay, Alex. Just wanted to let you know where I was coming from. I just focused this thread around age since it was unique to my experience. The bigger issue, sadly, is the lack of respect the moviegoing experience gets from people of all ages. I don't have problems with people exchanging a few comments but anyone who wants to jabber through a movie should just stay home.

Old people should die. As should young people. Young people should get old and die.

And babies. Babies should grow up, become teens, then adults, then seniors, and then die. And fetuses. They should be born, wear diapers, learn to crawl, speak, eat on their own, go to school, get jobs, have families and loved ones, and then continue getting old until they die.

And Earth, and all the animals on it, and plant life...and fish. Dead.

Fuckers.

When I went to see BABEL, a couple of very annoying old ladies were commenting on the movie very loudly during the screening. Everyone tolerated it until halfway through when a couple directly behind me turned around and POLITELY asked them to please refrain from talking during the film. Their response? "Why don't you go tell on me then!" spoken in a very condescending and infantile voice. "What is this, Kindergarden?" I yelled out... a bunch of people laughed and the old people shut up. Sometimes you gotta put people in their place.

Old people can't drive.

Troy Howarth
01-08-2007, 05:22 PM
The elderly and the infantile have many things in common, so it shouldn't come as any great shock that they, too, can be pains in the ass at the movies. That said, ignorance and bad manners know no age limit or any other kind of boundary.

And as far as what John just said - many old people cannot drive, that's for sure. The same can be said for many young people, as well, but in terms of the physical realities of aging, I'd say it wouldn't be a bad idea to have people re-take their driver's exam every year once they get past a certain age. It couldn't hurt.

It's just the "Leeches on society" comment was a bit too much for me to take.

What do you call pensions, social security, and medicare? I personally feel no remorse or responsibility to take care of somebody else's misfortune or lack of financial planning or proper preventative health measures. If you want to be secure in your later life, get an annuity and good health insurance, dont take it out of my paycheck.

This culture of entitlement and calling themselves the "greatest generation" is a bit too much for me to take.

Plus most board members that have been around long enough know not to take my posts so seriously, I can be coarse, but its just my sense of humor. If you still dont like it, well then...

I decided to write a song -

Leeches on Society
Get out of my face

Leeches on Society
Quit sucking my blood

Leeches on Society
Get out of my face

Leeches of Society
You're ruining my life

You got sick and lost your job
now you wanna hand out
Come over here so I can bust y'ur gob
You fucking leech I hate you

Are you gonna copyright that? I think you have solid gold there!

Also, notice I said nothing about Medicaid and welfare, which are for poor people, and those who have gotten sick and lost their jobs. It is retirement entitlements that I have a problem with, and those that chose to gamble it away at a poker table and act all indignant and rude, when it is the rest of working people at the table who is putting that money in their pockets in the first place. If you dont believe me, just go to any casino during the day and take a listen to the geezers.

I work with the elderly, and believe me when I say: a great many elderly people have an inflated sense of entitlement. I respect old people who have contributed and are decent people, but those old bastards who are bitter at the world and feel they are entitled to a free ride - especially when they have money - just because they've been around for so damn long... fuck 'em.

Jeremy C.

And while we're on that!

You spend your life on welfare lines
Or looking for handouts
Why don't you go find a job
You birth more kids to up your checks
So you can buy more drugs
Cash in food stamps and get drunk

[Chorus:]
Uncle Sam takes half my pay
So you can live for free
I got a family and bills to pay
No one hands money to me
You can go to school for nothing
Got that government grant
Get money in advance
When you're sick from shooting up
Medicaid pays full portion
When little Maria gets knocked up
She gets a free abortion

[Chorus]

How come it's minorities who cry
Things are too tough
On TV with their gold chains
Claim they don't have enough
I say make them clean the sewers
Don't take no resistance
If they don't like it go to hell
And cut their public assistance

Actually, those old people paid social security and medicare taxes just like everybody else. How are they leeches on society when they use it? I can't blame them for how the system has been run. And pensions come from the company one works for, not the government. Though you'd be lucky to find a job nowadays that has a pension. Most places if they give you anything stick you with a 401k. I'd say since wages in this country stagnated with the inflation rates since the early '70s we could use more social safety nets.

Back to the topic at hand though; I don't think existing on this earth for an extended amount of time warrants giving anyone extra respect. All people should be given respect unless they prove themselves to be assholes.

It was on the album that came out in 1986. I was kinda surprised when they claimed to be anti-racist....their music has always had a huge skinhead following, and I know a lot of old nazi skins who had the cover of Live at CBGB's tattooed on them.

I have yet to see AF live, but i've actually been meaning to remedy that sometime soon. The funny thing about your story is i saw the Dropkick Murphys on the Warped tour in 1998, and they had a HUGE skinhead following. I actually ran into a few old skin buddies, and they were remarking on how much the DM's reminded them of Skrewdriver.

That's because Jamey Jasta worships them and stole the AF playbook from them... :)

I like AF's first few albums--Victim In Pain was true hardcore, but then they started going into "metal land" with releases after that...Now, I really don't care for them too much...As far as the racism thing goes, I never really paid any attention to their lyrics...I'll have to ask my bass player about that...he knew them back in the 80's...

Back to topic, I just avoid the movies now...When I do go, it is early on Sunday...no one is ever there then...

Canada always gets fucked for the good bands on the Warped Tour, unless you live on the west coast. They may have been on that tour.
