Inspired by an offhand comment in the SGT. PEPPER VS PET SOUNDS thread.... post your favorite albums from Canadian artists to prove the alledged merit of this country's contribution to popular music.

I'll go first...

Two dogs fucking
deux chiens fourrent

In both languages, cant be more canadian than this.
(except the fact they wrote chiens without the "s" and it is obviously two dogs). Those album covers still pack a punch after all those years. Feed us a fetus is simply not right...and I like it!

I thought we were supposed to be defending the country's contributions to popular music not making a case against them?

Rush has been avoided for the same reason The Barenaked Ladies and Our Lady Peace have yet to be mentioned.

Rush just suck.

Rush just suck.

Yes, that seems to be the general concensus on this board...

But why?

They're great musicians and write excellent songs. Why the hate? People hate Rush here without explanation.

I like Rush. So I say, +1 for Canada.
You like Justin Timberlake, you say +1 America.
I think the guy is a dink extraodinaire. But to each his own...

But why?

Because Ian Jane says so.

For the same reason I don't like many bands. They hurt my fucking ears. Geddy Lee has a horrible voice and their music is too stale for me. It's like watered down prog trying to rock and prog has a hard enough time rocking on it's own when it's not watered down with Labatt.

If you sincerely think that listing Timberlake in a "Greatest American Contributions to Recorded Music" thread would get us a +1 on the same level as Rush would for Canada, there's all the reason we need to exclude them from this thread. :D

I love Rush... in my top 10 favorite bands, and the time I saw them at Jones Beach ranks as my all-time favorite concert experience, but I didn't mention 'em because I know a lot of people here don't like them... at ALL. But whatever, to each his own.

Well, they never wrote "SLAVE TO MY DICK", so they're definitely not the top Canadian band of all time....

If you filled Geddy Lee's nose full of quarters, you would have about $50! He could poke someone's eye out with that snot rocket.

I love Rush, because of their dorkiness- not in spite of it. PERMANENT WAVES and MOVING PICTURES are a couple of my favorite albums from the 1980's.

Besides, any band that collaborates with Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis is okay by me.

John G.
09-14-2006, 11:59 PM
They released a series of brilliant albums, but these to me are utterly perfect...

2112
Everyone talks about the first side, but side two is underrated as hell. "Twilight Zone" in particular has got to be one of the band's most underappreciated tunes, and of course "Something for Nothing" is the raging closer.

A FAREWELL TO KINGS
Their greatest, in my opinion... an eclectic collection that ranges from hard rock (the title track) to tasteful ballads ("Cinderella Man"), prog workouts ("Xanadu") and it all culminates in a sci-fi epic that gives "ELP's Karn Evil 9" a run for its money for over-the-top greatness ("Cygnus X-1"). An album for rock dorks, and I'm proud to be one.

HEMISPHERES
Four songs, nearly forty minutes. The title track continues where the last album left off, "Circumstances" is utterly brilliant, and the lengthy instrumental has some tasty soloing.

PERMANENT WAVES
Most prefer MOVING PICTURES over this one, but WAVES has all the pop wit with the added bonus of still retaining the band's progressive tendencies. "Spirit of the Radio" is the big hit here, but my attention is drawn to "Jacob's Ladder" and the incredibly intricate "Natural Science."

That's four studio albums in a row that I wouldn't hesitate to put on a Top 100 albums of All Time list. Not that many bands have had that kind of a streak (not good albums but PERFECT albums). I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Yeah, I'm a Rush dork... I'll shut up now.

Geddy Lee has a horrible voice and their music is too stale for me.

Yeah, I can totally see that. I feel that is the part of Rush that pushes the most people away.

It's like watered down prog trying to rock and prog has a hard enough time rocking on it's own when it's not watered down with Labatt.

Well, they have a prog element, no doubt. However, they're far from stale. Fuckin', wicked far from stale. The band has been around for over thirty years, and they progress with each album. Sure, they started with proggy
elements, but they've obviously moved on. Have you heard Rush lately? And by lately, I guess I mean since '83? They're probably the most dynamic band I've ever heard*.
I'm not much for an argument right now as I'm drunk and nearing bed. I just hate the fact that Rush gets no respect around here.

*Fuck. I probably say this a lot. I listen to lots of shit.

Yup. A record store clerk who I disliked very much (not for Rush reasons, though some may argue that it's reason enough) that worked at a friend's store used to be really into them. Actually played more recent stuff when we let him take over the record player. Stuff like "Vapor Trail", "Roll the Bones" and the one with the fucking bunnies on the cover of the LP. As much as I dislike early Rush, I'd take 2112's garbage over Show Don't Tell. It seemed to just get worse as it went along, but honestly I'm not open enough to give any band a fair shake after countless crash and burns. After about ten albums the suck all sounds the same.

I don't hate anyone for being a Rush fan, I hate Rush for having fans.
