I don't tend to remember specific lines from either books or films but I recently got turned onto Jayne Anne Phillips and there are a few lines from Gemscrack that I absolutely love. Gemscrack, as I understand it, was inspired by David Berkowitz and is basically a monolog by a Son of Sam-esque madman. The prose does have a bit of a 70's flavor but I really like it.
here is a choice bit from the beginning--
"You see me everywhere. I spit on the surface of the night, on the rattling backdrops of subway gutter art. I suck you up like erasers. I am that glittering drop of mercury spilled out of a broken glass stick. Mark me in numbers and names of the dead."

"I think, even, if I ever die, and they stick me in a cemetery, and I have a tombstone and all, it'll say "Holden Caulfield" on it, and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it'll say "Fuck you". I'm positive, in fact."-J.D. Salinger, "The Catcher In The Rye".

"My Dear fellow, life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over the great city, gently remove the roofs, and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the outre results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and forseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable."(A Case of Identity)

"No TECHNIQUE! No SCHOOL! No SAMURAI HEART! I have only MEIFUMADO!"(Trail Markers:LW&C Vol 5)
"One struggles with all his might to fend off danger. But once he has done all he can, he accepts fate with equanimity. NATURAL LAW! Would anyone leave everything to chance?!"(Executioner's Hill:LW&C Vol 5)
"The Ura-Yagyu are the SHOGUN's assassins-I cannot have my vengeance unless I walk that same assassin's road!"(Decapitator Asaemon:LW&C Vol 5)

If I started quoting all my favorite lines of literature, I'd be writing for the next 10 years, but here's a wee bit from Beckett's "First Love." The narrator is visiting his father's grave:
"Personally I have nothing against graveyards, I take the air there willingly, perhaps more willingly than elsewhere, when take the air I must. The smell of corpses, distinctly perceptible under those of grass and humus mingled, I do not find unpleasant, a trifle on the sweet side perhaps, a trifle heady, but how infinitely preferable to what the living emit, their feet, teeth, armpits, arses, sticky foreskins and frustrated ovules. And when my father's remains join in, however modestly, I can almost shed a tear."

the greatest opening in the history of western literature
"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive..." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"" - Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

Agreed! As trendy as it is now to quote Thompson, you know, since they made a big "drug movie" about him, and the kids all did acid and checked it out, man, that opening has the same effect every time i open the book...from the first time i read it 13 years ago, up until today.

I remember how sad I was when the movie came out, all the ravers and assorted other druggies at my school who'd never read any of the great man's books all got really stoned and went to see the movie, I went totally sober because I wanted to be able to absorb everything that was going on plus being a Gilliam film I felt drugs weren't something I needed to enjoy it. I've read a great number of his books but I think "Fear and Loathing" is still my favorite followed by "Hell's Angels"

Bay deep-mouthed welcome as we draw near home;
'Tis sweet to know there is an eye will mark
Our coming and look brighter when we come."

Want to hear a real pisser? I picked up a copy of Hell's Angels at a used bookstore, first edition, hardcover, for like 12 bucks, and some motherfucker stole it. So, now i have the paperback, but good look finding a first print ever again, without it costing a bazillion dollars.

A lord longs for retainers who can be his wind and his cloud. In truth, they long for retainers such as YOURSELF. Perfect loyality, beyond death. Unchanging like the HOZUKI you take for your name. Lord Arima was blessed with both CLOUD and WIND."(Cloud Dragon, Wind Tiger:LW&C Vol 7)

Ogami Itto:"Why do you protect him?"
Hayase Togo:"It takes more than a handful of drawings to bridge the Omono! Only ONE MAN can muster the resources-The LORD of our HAN!"
Itto:"Your BRIDGE has been REFUSED! A BUSHI should die for a master who knows wisdom. No good can come of protecting a FOOL. Now-STAND BACK!"(Wife of the Heart:LW&C Vol 9)
Togo:"I don't protect the MAN...I protect the GOOD of the PEOPLE! If our lord dies now, how many months, how many YEARS before the bridge is built?! My love of our han and our people should move a heart of stone! Yes, he's turned me down. But if I lay down my LIFE for him, even Daigaku-Sama will understand."
Itto:"No. He will not listen, no matter what you do!"
Itto:"Such is the world of the SAMURAI. The harsh, foolish way of BUSHIDO! If you pursue this DREAM, a day will come when you must KILL that WOMAN!"
Togo:"I...I don't UNDERSTAND! Speak clearly!"
Itto:"Bide your time. Live together, heal BOTH your wounds together. LIVE for your bridge! Now-Stand BACK!"
Togo:"NEVER!"(Wife of the Heart:LW&C Vol 9)
"Even without knowing all, his life would have seemed an endless hell. yet if there are PLANS, his bridge WILL be built. His heart and soul fill these pages. You must LIVE, and fulfill your husband's dream...For you are his WIFE OF THE HEART."(Wife of the Heart:LW&C Vol 9)
"I ask instead that you leave him behind you. Father and son...We live in MEIFUMADO, accepting the trials of the SIX PATHS and the FOUR LIVES."(Wandering Samurai:LW&C Vol 9)
"Is it BUSHIDO to stay by the palanquin, even if it costs the battle, and to die defending one's lord to the DEATH?! Does it VIOLATE BUSHIDO to ATTACK, correctly reading the battlefield, confident of victory, and ultimately PROTECTING one's lord? The answer eludes me, and thus I have become a lowly WATARI-KACHI rootless to this day! I thought that this way I might again find myself defending a lord's paranquin...And so discover in battle the answer for which I seek. OGAMI-DONO! TELL me! What is the PATH-Ngk! O-OGAMI DONO! What is BUSHIDO?!"(Wandering Samurai:LW&C Vol 9)
"BUSHIDO is to always serve one's lord with death in one's heart!"(Wandering Samurai:LW&C Vol 9)
"I speak only of the duty of a palanquin guard. The true BUSHI is always ready to die for his lord. And thus he serves! To die attacking, to die defending! There is no difference in the purity of spirit! had I been in your place, I would not have stayed by the palanquin and let the battle be lost. I would have attacked!"(Wandering Samurai LW&C Vol 9)

"There goes a REAL samurai, boys! A REAL samurai, when there ain't no more like that left in the whole world! We HADAKA-MUSHI can tell this story fer GENERATIONS...That there was still one SAMURAI like 'im left. Makin hisself one o'us...carrying peasants and town folks on his BACK...All for his GOAL...And all with his KID at his side...Damn I dunno what kind'a QUEST yeron...But it's more'n a man cando."(Naked Worms:LW&C Vol 9)
"DAMN you, Ogami Itto! If you stole that box, you've sniffed out the Secret of the URA-YAGYU! There's no time to lose! We need the LETTER back! Until now we've honored our PLEDGE never to attack you head-on! But did you think that was the LIMIT of our POWER?! Plunder our SECRETS, will you? BAH! You haven't the WITS to figure them out! To you it's just another GOJO letter, nothing more! But by STEALING it, you've unknowningly CHALLENGED the UGA-YAGYU DIRECTLY! You've ended our PACT of your own ACCORD! FOOL! Don't you see how POWERLESS you ARE?!"(The Yagyu Letter, Prologue:LW&C Vol 9)
"Listen WELL! The truce is OVER! The URA-YAGYU rise in FORCE to STRIKE DOWN Ogami Itto! We must retake the GOJO BAKO!"(The Yagyu Letter, Prologue:LW&C Vol 9)
"DAMN you, Ogami Itto! See the TRUE power of the YAGYU ASSASSINS!"(The Yagyu Letter, Prologue:LW&C Vol 9)
06-02-2003, 03:30 PM
"Heh Heh. CLEAVER move, Ogami Itto! You planned to PANIC us into action by stealing the GOJO-BAKO. If you and the Yagyu battle to the death, rumors will spread...And your case will reach the ears of the SHOGUN himself. IS THAT your scheme? But That only works among EQUALS, Itto!"(Yagyu Letter:LW&C Vol 10)
"What can a homeless assassin with a child in his arms do to the YAGYU?! Even if you survive the KUROKAWA, how can you defeat the archers and rifle brigades of Suwa and Numazu?! You're a pitiful JOKE, Itto. The YAGYU control the NATION! You think to destroy us with your paper sword?!"(Yagyu Letter:LW&C Vol 10)
"Yet as long as we hold the letter, the YAGYU will ATTACK. And when they do...Then may we find LIFE in DEATH. Daigoro-By stealing the Gojo-Bako, we threw down our gauntlet to the Yagyu. We stand at the intersection of the six paths and the four lives!"(Yagyu Letter:LW&C Vol 10)
"You hate the wrong man. Seek vengeance on the YAGYU! KUROKAWA FOOLS! What HONOR when you abandon the path of DUTY?!"(Yagyu Letter:LW&C Vol 10)
"Daigoro! We enter MEIFUMADO!"(YAGYU LETTER:LW&C VOL 10)
"Life in DEATH...We LIVE...!!"(Yagyu Letter:LW&C Vol 10)
"He was a child who knew no tears. A child without words, who showed no feelings. A child of destiny, tragically adapted to the world of slaughter in which he lived. The child...Did not cry because he was afraid. He did not cry because he was alone. For the first time since his birth...He cried in sorrow."(Tears of Daigoro:LW&C Vol 10)
"What could he possibly tell them...? That he lived in a world of slaughter...? That he searched for a father pursued by the flashing blades of the YAGYU...? There was no way he could speak...No way he could answer. He was starving...And yet...He was a boy who had learned never to rely on the kindness of strangers. A child who knew only the remote, stony face of his father, and thought that so he too should live. To the boy, the dancing silver scales on the weir seemed infinitely precious. So many people had sweated so long and hard to catch them. He could not conceive of taking without giving in return. And to the boy, there was only one way to give. Like his father, He must put his life on the line. He was the son of an assassin, gold received...For human lives."(Fisherwoman's Love:LW&C Vol 10)
"The father could read what had happened here this night. Almost certainly this noble man had perished protecting his child. As a SAMURAI it was only fitting that he return him to ash. A night fire was dangerous. It was the same as announcing his location to the Yagyu. Yet he was a father who found PURPOSE in DEATH...Even though he was a father for whom every second counted as he searched for his son."(Drifting Shadows:LW&C Vol 10)
"He had also cremated the bodies of Yagyu assassins. Thouugh mortal enemies, they were nonetheless SAMURAI. He was a father who lived by the six paths and the four lives. A father who believed that the warrior seeks LIFE in DEATH."(Drifting Shadows:LW&C Vol 10)
"Vengeance ONLY! I'll EXPOSE your LETTERS, and CRUSH your YAGYU until no trace REMAINS!"(Drifting Shadows:LW&C Vol 10)

06-05-2003, 03:11 PM
"It was a father's last, desperate gamble for finding his missing son. For this destined parent and child, these filmsy tailsman were the only communication left them in an unforgiving world. If the boy saw them, he would know the cart pointed in the direction of his father. And so that father now posted pictures to his child, where once he had pasted the tailsmans of MEIFUMADO to invite in clients of death and assassination. Truly they were a family with no tomorrow, their future denied them by cruel destiny."(Tailsmans of Hades:LW&C Vol 11)
"He was also a father pursued by the YAGYU, and all who served them. Swordsmen lay in wait wherever he traveled, sharpening their swords in anticipation. Word had spread of rich rewards for any who laid this father's head before the Yagyu. Wherever he journeyed, at any time, the fangs of another starving wolf might snap at his heels. These hopeful tailsmans with their rude drawings of a child's cart...Were as likely to summon the Gods and Demons of Death and Steel as they were to call a wandering child back to a father's side. Of this he held no illusions. And yet...He was a father who lived at the juncture of the six paths and the four lives, who had chosen of his own accord to walk the torturous path to hell. All he had to trust was the way of the warrior...LIFE in DEATH. It was HIS decision. His CHOICE."(Tailsmans of Hades:LW&C Vol 11)

"This was his mother's homeland. Expelled from Edo, Itto had carried her ashes here for burial...Three long years ago. It was the first time the boy had prayed at his mother's grave. But did he realize his mother's spirit slept in the earth here where he bowed his head...Or no? His father would tell him nothing."(Poem for the Grave:LW&C Vol 11)

Putting my WIFE in front of strangers...ALL to find you, you and that damn SCAR on your belly...The only HAPPINESS we had LEFT was DEATH! THINK of that, you BASTARD! And we couldn't even DIE! Not until we found you! It's fucking HARD to live, Ryuzo...When all you've got is HATE."(Nameless, Penniless, Lifeless:LW&C Vol 12)

"TANGO NO SEKKU...The annual BOY'S DAY festival in early May. On this day, families prayed for a happy future...They drove the demons from their homes...What demons did this wandering father and son exorcise this day? And this other child...Wordless in a wooden cart..."(Day of the Demon:LW&C Vol 14)

"It''s time to bury LONE WOLF AND CUB-by FRONTAL ASSAULT! Send riders to all the DAIMYO of all the HAN! All the DAIKAN of all Shogunate territories! ARREST 'Lone Wolf and Cub'...! Real names, OGAMI ITTO and his son DAIGORO! If they can't ARREST them-KILL THEM! Part the very blades of GRASS to hunt them down! The law of the land DEMANDS we execute ANYONE who makes his living by assassination. It's for the PUBLIC GOOD! JUSTICE stands with the YAGYU! CURSE you, Ogami Itto! But WHEREVER you hide in the sixty STATES of JAPAN, we'll track you DOWN! We'll END this long struggle, ONCE and for ALL! OGAMI ITTO!!"(Demon Hide Demon Seek:LW&C Vol 16)

"Kill one...We kill for today. Kill two...We kill for tomorrow. Kill three souls...The blood flows thick. Hatred is heavy and blood is dark. Though tears can be hidden an heart's break. Starlight sleeps into the bone, blood runs dry in frozen hearts, and night descends on tangled fields. A homeless journey beyond dark fate, lament of windflowers, moan of wind blooming in shadow, hell's sweet blossoms. Eyes fixed on fleeting phantoms, we look to tomorrows that never come."(To a Tomorrow That Never Comes:LW&C Vol 17)
"ITTO! Sanuki HAN does not ride against Lone Wolf and Cub, ASSASSIN! We ride against Ogami Itto, WARRIOR! And thus we SORTIE in full BATTLE ARMOR. The least I can do......To HONOR my old TEACHER."(Will of the Fang:LW&C Vol 17)

Itto:"Glory beyond my station."(Will of the Fang:LW&C Vol 17)

"A parent's tears, passed on to his child. Playthings of destiny, this father and son howled out their sorrow to the pitiless wasteland. Their scream wrenched deep from their souls, the scream of BLOOD. In the rapid of TIME, another turning of the equinox drew nigh. In the world of men, it was a time of rejoicing, welcoming the coming year. And yet...For this father and son, no celebration. Only WILL. The WILL of the FANG on the road to MEIFUMADO. Seasonless. Unbroken without end."(Will of the Fang:LW&C Vol 17)
"The wind howled...The wind screamed...'LET...US...DIE...LET...US...LIVE...' The wind shrieked...Yet in the ears of this parent and child of MEIFUMADO, the voice of the wind whispered...'In death...LIFE."(Life in Death:LW&C Vol 17)

"Rashness isn't BRAVERY. The solitary woman's future is BLEAK. Love, hate, duty, anger. Joy, rage, pity, happiness. For one on a quest, there is only HATE. NO quests for lovers. Live peacefully as one."(Wives and Lovers:LW&C Vol 19)
"Shigemasa. HEAR me! Lone Wolf is no individual. He's a mighty ARMY! I do not say this in FEAR. Nor do I EXAGGERATE. We Yagyu MADE him thus, through years of COMBAT. Time and AGAIN, we attacked and LOST. The ura-Yagyu. The KuroKuwa. The Hodai. Even the Firewatchers. All VANQUISHED. I put out WARRANTS, sent HAN to hunt him, post BOUNTIES. For NAUGHT."(Marksman:LW&C Vol 19)
"A Han and three territories, DECIMATED. One MAN, as strong as an ARMY. Feared like a DEMON! Brave men QUAIL at his name. None who face him expect to SURVIVE. No wonder he cuts through every net I cast. We, his PURSUERS, have MADE him thus. And MORE! He uses the rivalries of HAN and territory to erode our solidarity. Our blunders AID him. He's like KOMEI setting living enemies to flight, even in DEATH!"(Marksman:LW&C Vol 19)
"The DAIMYO and the Shogunate are turning against us. He SENSES that and goes on the OFFENSIVE, ever since we began our frontal assault, he's advanced EAST toward Edo. He plans to CHALLENGE me in the capital! He would crush us forever, and seek clemency from the Shogunate. And he can DO it! He has the YAGYU LETTER! Tens of thousands of RYO! How will he use them? Since he hasn't revealed the LETTER, I assume he hasn't broken it's secret. That's our LAST hope."(Marksman:LW&C Vol 19)
"Since he only eats to live, he doesn't distinguish between good and bad. Children learn that from their mother. But his mother died when he was born."(Mother's Flavor:LW&C Vol 19)
"When SHAKA the Buddha was still of the world, he sat beneath the bodhi tree......And swore not to move until he achived enlightenment. Not even the death lord, MARA could hinder him, for life and death were nothing in his eyes. In the dark of night, Mara came as a great army, as assassin and holy man, as Shaka's mother, father, and child left behind in Kapila castle. Six times Mara Tempted Shaka, but he moved not an inch. And when, in this way, all hinderance had passed, a great moon rose in the east. And Shaka felt as though that moon , utterly silent yet full of Power, pale yet mighty, placid yet holy, had entered his heart. And instantly he was enlightened, and his heart's eye opened."(The Moon in Our Hearts:LW&C Vol 19)
"We live in MEIFUMADO, defying RIKUDO SHISHO. We must BEAR the UNBEARABLE, defeat ALL who attack. We CANNOT waver until we achive our QUEST. See the MOON, Daigoro! I named you for DAIGO, the ENLIGHTENMENT. Open your HEART! When creation sleeps, it looks to the moon from ocean and lake, field and hill and crag. Watch, until you and the moon are the world, and you and the moon are one. Should your father die, look to the moon. There is father and mother and self. To see the moon is to be with us always. Let sorrow and loneliness fade away...If father dies and becomes one with the moon, then YOU must finish our quest. Soon we set foot in Edo. We must let the moon into our hearts......And CHALLENGE the Yagyu to BATTLE!"(The Moon in Our Hearts:LW&C Vol 19)
"He who trusts NUMBERS loses to the FEW. DESPISING his foe, he is BLIND. He thinks lies are TRUTH. He thinks truth LIES. As you do Yagyu!"(The Moon in Our Hearts:LW&C Vol 19)

"Don't let Abe-No-Kaii kill LONE WOLF! The Yagyu and Ogami Itto are BLOOD ENEMIES. To purge this hatred and save the clan, you must fight him YOURSELF! People will whisper throughout Japan...'The warrior Yagyu used a POISONER to defeat LONE WOLF!' You'll be a LAUGHINGSTOCK! Will your children-Kurando, Hyogo, Gunbei, and Sayaka-SAMA-rejoice in their graves? Their lives lost in pursuit of this shameful end? RETSUDO-SAMA! Kill Itto YOURSELF! Abe-No-Kaii is no SAMURAI! He'll stop at nothing for power. He's a BEAST, devoid of SHIDO! See how he thought he could turn me with AFUYO. No BUSHI, no SHINOBI would surrender to AFUYO...But he doesn't UNDERSTAND! Don't let such a beast kill Ogami Itto! Itto's a BUSHI among BUSHI! Like the YAGYU! He has the YAGYU LETTER. Yet he doesn't use it. Because he's a man of HONOR! RETSUDO-SAMA! RECONSIDER!"(A Taste of Poison:LW&C Vol 20)
"Forgive me, Jinnai. You spoke the truth. I was about to heap SHAME upon SHAME. Yes...I shall kill Ogami Itto! But now...Before that...Abe-No-Kaii!"(A Taste of Poison:LW&C Vol 20)

"I've HEARD about this...They say a sword master has two KI. Even asleep, even unconscious, never at rest...SHIN-GI, catching the BLOOD LUST. HADA-GI, catching the breeze of an attack on the skin. THEY move the sword by THEMSELVES. MU itself. Mind and body as ONE. I DON'T BELIVE that crap...I WON'T belive it...but, but..."(Poison Currents:LW&C Vol 21)
"TEN DAYS have passed since Ogami Itto and his son entered Edo! We've tried tricks and plots, and FAILED! We stand upon the PRECIPICE! No more STRATEGMS! We take him HEAD ON! We raise ALL our clan...And AT LAST-KILL HIM!! We shall be a FLOOD of death, ENGULFING him! And I shall strike off his HEAD! The FINAL BATTLE! By which we RISE or FALL!"(Flood of Fire:LW&C Vol 21)
"At least be a BUSHI in death!"(Flood of Fire:LW&C Vol 21)

Retsudo:"SHIDO is to find your death. Understand...?"
Retsudo:"Then I can't kill you."
Kaii:"Now I REALLY don't!!"(The Last Fistful:LW&C Vol 22)
"You pretend to be HANGED? What FOOLISHNESS! It might work with peasants, but not SAMURAI! No BUSHI would fake death for men ready to DIE. Only SCUM! How much DEATH have I seen, hmm? As SWORDSMAN, as SAMURAI, I've seen ALL the faces of death. You? Fool me? SAMURAI swords kill SAMURAI. Killing scum such as you would foul our blades. Ogami Itto thought the same. You are a WORM, not worth cutting. Pathetic."(The Last Fistful:LW&C Vol 22)
"For what did it lament? For what did it rage? Heaven cried...Heaven howled. The tears of heaven became the rain...The anger of heaven became the wind. Sobs and screams crashing down on Earth below. The Earth endured...Silently endured. But the rivers of the Earth overflowed with heaven's tears. The forrests of the earth thrashed under heaven's anger. And here, between heaven and earth...Men. Men, on the cusp of battle. Each staking their very lives on what would come. A storm hung over Edo..."(Heaven and Earth:LW&C Vol 22)
"Father and son, they both knew. At last...At last their time had come. Had they lived for this moment? Or had they needed this moment in order to live? Yet one thing they knew-This was their goal. This was the moment that had brought them through MEIFUMADO...It was time. THEIR time. And now that it pressed in upon them, father and son exchanged no words. Triumphing against all odds, enduring all suffering, they had come through MEIFUMADO to the divide between life and death. They had no need of words. They needed only each other. Here at the junction of the six paths and the four lives. Living together. Dying together. Such was their love, love between father and son, surpassing all other bonds of parent and child. In life. In DEATH. Together..."(Heaven and Earth:LW&C Vol 22)
"Our hatred is PERSONAL. Best to keep it that way. I won't deny it-When I stole the letter, I wanted to EXPOSE you. But walking in MEIFUMADO...I killed many people. Turned meaningful lives into meaningless death. Enough. No more HARM."(Heaven and Earth:LW&C Vol 22)
"The how will he FIGHT? Can a four-year-old battle the YAGYU, feared throughout Japan? I could have taught him the warrior arts from the day he was BORN, and he still wouldn't stand a chance. Yet FATE commands that he fights besides me! If he's only going to HINDER our final battle, why should he have LIVED? He can't fight you as a BUSHI, so I used the ASSASSIN'S gold to buy him TOTEKIRAI! For this FINAL day! COWARDLY....?! Not SHIDO...?!"(Heaven and Earth:LW&C Vol 22)
"And you threw that to show us. So we'd know what WEAPON we faced...You're a worthy foe, OGAMI DAIGORO!"(Heaven and Earth:LW&C Vol 22)
"Kaii the FOOL. Now Yagyu Retsudo and Ogami Itto raced TOGETHER to save Edo. His best laid plans, UNDONE."(Heaven and Earth:LW&C Vol 22)
"Indeed...Not MEN. No man could have entered that surging current, the bone-chilling cold, and survived. Only a WOLF...And only-even worn by age-A TIGER."(Fire on the River of Blood:LW&C Vol 22)

"Icicle...For whom do you shed your tears of ice? Sorrow? For the passing of the Yagyu? Or only...Pity? Yes, I am the last Ura-Yagyu. We, whose words were once feared across the sixty states of Japan! I, the sole survivor. And yet...Too SOON for TEARS!"(Tears of Ice:LW&C Vol 23)
"There was a scent......All the time he'd slept. A scent not his father's. Enveloping him. A scent, like an ancent cedar tree. And a scent that was also the scent of the enemy. An INSTINCT close to the beasts', stirred at the bottom of his consciousness...FOUND that scent from among all others. Told him it was the scent of their hated foe. And that HE was in ENEMY HANDS..."(Tears of Ice:LW&C Vol 23)
"My sword and your FATHER'S sword were stuck in the earth. You saw them...? That's a promise between SAMURAI. I'll explain. It means two things. First, that we'll not fight again until we take up our swords. In other words...A TRUCE. Understand...? So, for the moment, your father and I are at peace. The other meaning-A silent promise. So long as we live, we WILL take up those swords again, and fight to the DEATH."(Tears of Ice:LW&C Vol 23)
"It was true. The two of them-The THREE of them-were no longer HUMAN. If they were human, they would have exhausted strength and will......Would have fallen there. Beneath the moon. But if not human, then...What? Truly. They were the WIND. Wind. The wind as they attacked...As they retreated...At times, soft as a Spring breeze, scattering the lightest feather...At others, a roaring whirlwind, pelting dust and sand. A wind, always blowing. On the attack. On the defense. Melding with all nature, here on silent earth, here beneath the blue blow of the moon. All thought silenced. One with MU. Like the wind...In the language of BUDO, NYUSHIN-NO WAZA. GOD-LIKE."(Death in the Moonlight:LW&C Vol 23)
"KENGO. The ENLIGHTENMENT of the sword, to which warriors had aspired since antiquity. No flesh. No mind. Flowing around the rocks. Wafting through the forrests, drifting over water. When all is nothingness, there is no fatigue. Only...Response, action. Action, response. But more amazing was the boy. He too had reached KENGO. He too had achieved MU. Like his father, he too was the wind...Father and son, together in MU. And because they fought as the wind. Fought as one...No fatigue...No hunger...No cold..."(Death in the Moonlight:LW&C Vol 23)
"Meet KYO...Emptiness......With EMPTINESS. If your foe strikes into the emptiness, become JITSU. Become REAL. The stance of emptiness can only be met...With emptiness. Both opponents. Neither moving nor moved. No TEMPTATION. But the real-demands the REAL. REALITY, striking into EMPTINESS. When unequal opponents battle, THAT decides the victor. The powerful sees through his opponent's emptiness. Finds the opening. But when BOTH are evenly matched......It cannot be. No opening to be found for EITHER. And thus, both strike the stance of emptiness. Wait. TEMPT. He who is TEMPTED...DIES. Meet emptiness......With emptiness. The real......With the real. KYOKYO JITSUJITSU. So it is said..."(Death in the Moonlight:LW&C Vol 23)
"Ogami Itto, UNRIVALLED!"(Death in the Moonlight:LW&C Vol 23)
"The wind had stopped. But by then...He had reached his limit at last. Oh, young life! Child born under fateful stars. Heaven turns it's tears to ice...Scatters them as the snow. Daigoro."(Silent Snow:LW&C Vol 23)
Itto:"They say that old KIRIN loses to a TOBA."
Retsudo:"You think so?"
Retsudo:"And You...WOLF indeed. Your fangs, so hard to break..."(Silent Snow:LW&C Vol 23)

"Those tiny hands were devoid of sensation. Frostbiten, they could hold nothing. Indeed...It was a miracle he was still alive. There was no pain. In frostbite, intense cold restricts circulation to exposed flesh, and the skin begins to breakdown. At first, bitter cold. Next, searing pain. And finally...Nothing. By then, the skin itself turns blue. And blue was the color of these small hands. The child's feet were the same. He felt nothing as he walked. When frostbite penetrates beneath the skin, affecting cartilage, muscle, and bone...The tissue die and gangrene set in. Skin, nails, and even fingers fall off...But of course, the boy knew nothing of this."(Child of the Fields:LW&C Vol 24)
"I mix drugs to KILL people. Fevers...? Saving lives...? Not my skill."(In These Small Hands:LW&C Vol 24)
"Small hands...Yet SAMURAI hands. Such would be his fate in BATTLE."(In These Small Hands:LW&C Vol 24)
Retsudo:"Kaii. Do you know how to cook rice?"
Retsudo:"Not even how to RINSE it?"
Retsudo:"Is it odd to see us cook? Make fires? ENTERTAINING, Kaii? Can't tear yourself AWAY?"
Retsudo:"We know how to cook rice and build fires because we're BUSHI, Kaii."
Retsudo:"You think it's AMUSING for BUSHI to do menial labor. BUSHI should FIGHT. Not do the work of servents, of WOMEN. Yes? But then...Who would cook on the BATTLEFIELD?"
Retsudo:"Our SAMURAI hands let us do this. And yours' CAN'T. So you are not BUSHI. All you can do is make poison. Now go MAKE it!! Kill what's consuming DAIGORO!!"(In These Small Hands:LW&C Vol 24)
"First...I go to the castle at dawn. If I-like your father-do not return...Go to the HATCHO at NOON. The former KOGI KAISHAKUNIN Ogami Itto and his son Daigoro will be there. Tell Ogami Itto...'Perhaps SHISAN'[perhaps in death]."(The Last Cherry Blossoms:LW&C Vol 24)
"BAKU, you SPIRIT BEAST, mythical eater of DREAMS. You live in our lord's chambers, eating the dreams of DAIMYO. How many DAIMYO's dreams have you eaten, BAKU? How many have you sent to their deaths? BAKU! Hear me! I thought I was your master. For more than fifty years, my grass have brought me the secrets of the HAN, and I to generation of SHOGUN. That was how you ATE, BAKU. That was why I thought myself your master, FEEDING you. And now you want to eat my dreams? Your MASTER'S dreams, BAKU?! Eat them, and the nation will fray like straw. You may NEVER AGAIN have dreams to eat, BAKU. And still you think to gobble MINE?! You shall not HAVE them, BAKU! NEVER!"(Stone Upon Stone:LW&C Vol 24)

"Daigoro. In the era of SENGOKU, general Ishida Mitsunari was to be beheaded at dawn. They gave him a persimmon. But he refused, saying they upset his stomach. His enemies MOCKED him, saying he should worry for his HEAD. But Mitsunari replied. 'Until I die, I LIVE. A general protects his body.' Understand, Daigoro? Mitsunari lived to fight. He watched for a chance to his last breath. Tomorrow is OUR last day. A WARRIOR wouldn't eat something that could make him ill."(Perhaps in Death:LW&C Vol 25)
"Isn't it the TRUTH, Retsudo-SAMA? A man's life is like the waterwheel of reincarnation. Spinning in life's current...Around and around...We can't fight it. We spin until we die."(Perhaps in Death:LW&C Vol 25)
"The Hollyhock crest and I are INSEPARABLE. I'm their eyes and ears, nose and mouth, arms and legs! If the Yagyu perish, the Tokugawa go BLIND. No EARS to hear the warhorse hooves, the clash of blades and roar of muskets. No NOSE to smell out the secrets of the land. No MOUTH to drink the blood of DAIMYO. No Yagyu-No Tokugawa! I'll summon the GRASS, kill Itto, and rebuild the CLAN!"(Perhaps in Death:LW&C Vol 25)
"To have and to HOLD. A peasant his hoe...A merchant, his scales...A BUSHI, his SWORD. At his side always, weightless, ready. We earn the RIGHT to hold. But a SAMURAI MUST hold his sword. Daigoro...You're finally HOLDING your stick. Do you see? Come. They weigh the same as your stick. You're earned the right to hold them. To HOLD. Not to use. Tomorrow you'll defend this spot-Pledged by two SAMURAI-to the DEATH. None can tell the future. But if disater strikes, take them to safety. Return them when it's over. If someone tries to take them, YOU take them first. Give them to NO ONE. Yes...?"(By His Own Hand:LW&C Vol 25)

My nominee for greatest opening paragraph ever:
"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone."

Retsudo:"Did you learn how to perform SEPPUKU?"
Retsudo:"No...? I'm happy to show my kind host. Toss me a fan. The fan's your SEPPUKU-TO. The paper the offering tray. Lean foward and place the tray under your hips. After a skillful beheading, your head will dangle by a strip of skin. Don't forget this! Be a BUSHI in DEATH! At LAST!"(Struggle in the Dark:LW&C Vol 26)
"A SAMURAI fights for his lord, GLORY in DEATH. You're struggling in the DARK, Abe. PITIFUL."(Struggle in the Dark:LW&C Vol 26)
"When I go to fight, you'll be with me. Understand? But for now, I leave my SPIRIT...In your hands, Daigoro. Are you ready?"(Sons of the Spirits:LW&C Vol 26)
"Edo had changed. Now that name struck TERROR. And so Itto again trod the soil of the capital, pushing deep into enemy territory, the wheels of karma once more began to turn..."(Sons of the Spirits:LW&C Vol 26)
"When they speak of true BUSHI, they mean you, sir."(Sons of the Spirits:LW&C Vol 26)
"Stop! I see it! Such will! Such PERFECTION! Sword and hand as one! TOTAL FREEDOM! Remarkable. Four years in the earth, and no rust. Preserved with a warrior's heart. The scent of a BUSHI...When did I smell it last?"(Sons of the Spirits:LW&C Vol 26)
"What...What an INCREDIBLE man! Even the SAMURAI don't doubt him. They BOW...So natural, so REFINED...He MAKES them bow...No...Not that. It's WHERE he is...His soul in a space beyond LIFE and DEATH."(Sons of the Spirits:LW&C Vol 26)
"Think what you did to ME! But did I WEEP? Did I even ONCE explode in anger? That is the heart of a SAMURAI. Act like one...In DEATH. Rage at heaven, pay the price. MEDITATE."(Great Reversals:LW&C Vol 26)
"As a steam flows from high land to low, so Ogami Itto moved through the castle like water. His quiet natural ease aroused no suspicions among the castle SAMURAI. Nor was it in the nature of castle society to challenge and question. Acknowledge, but not delay...And now, Itto was deep in ther heart of the HONMARU keep."(Great Reversals:LW&C Vol 26)

"Time flows. Seasons turn. Scarlet Summer...Silver Fall...Black Winter. Then after the Winter, green Spring. People die and are born again. Don't fight your fate...your death. If you're SCARLET SUMMER, I'm the SILVER FALL, RETSUDO the BLACK WINTER. We all die, one by one...No Salvation. But the wheel of karma cannot be broken. And so I must take your head."(Scarlet Summer, Silver Fall:LW&C Vol 26)
"At last, Abe-No-Kaii felt no fear. He who could never be a BUSHI had butchered three armed SAMURAI with his own hands. He felt a profound SATISFACTION, verging on joy. Scarlet Summer...Silver Fall...Black Winter. There he was-Ranked alongside Itto and Retsudo. For his second, Ogami Itto...KOGI KAISHAKUNIN,. The man who could be no BUSHI, dispatched by the last true BUSHI's blade. Abe-No-Kaii as sinister as his poison. Yet somehow, impossibe to hate. The curtain fell at last on his ill-starred life."(Scarlet Summer, Silver Fall:LW&C Vol 26)

"He is protecting them! SERIOUSLY. Like father, like son. It's scary..."(To Protect and Defend:LW&C Vol 27)
"They couldn't help themselves, these grown men...An innocent child's heart had touched them, and ELEVATED them. SHISHU-Defending and protecting, to the DEATH. Worthy of any SAMURAI..."(To Protect and Defend:LW&C Vol 27)
"Only days after the flood, a great inferno. An inauspicious kitchen fire on the day on his pilgrimage. Rumors that Abe Tanoshi had died a macabre death, with Ogami Itto himself delivering the coup de grace. And still Retsudo kept his silence. The Shogun groaned under the stress. Night lay heavy in the inner palace. Crushed beneath the lower gloom, the SHOGUN ground his teeth in fitful slumber."(From Whom to Die:LW&C Vol 27)
"Though it DESTROYS me, let me build a firm FOUNDATION! My own fate means NOTHING! Let me PROTECT the TOKUGAWA! We've guarded the RYUEI for GENERATIONS! In a world gone soft, we stand FALSELY ACCUSED! But for my LORD, I shall not fear DEATH! Let me be a demon guarding his clan from beyond the GRAVE! ETERNAL GLORY to my LORD!"(For Whom to Die:LW&C Vol 27)
"FORGIVE ME, my liege. Forgive me for luring you here with TRICKERY. Yet I spoke the TRUTH without the YAGYU there is no TOKUGAWA. I know it in my BONES. As the TOKUGAWA go, so go the Yagyu. Please UNDERSTAND."(For Whom to Die:LW&C Vol 27)
"Yagyu and Ura-Yagyu, ALL cut down by his sword. Only you and I remain. Before summoning you, I challenged him to battle......CERTAIN that I would win. I did not. The YAGYU school of the sword, the finest in the land, fought to a draw by his Suio School. Ogami has no peer...And age drags me down. His SHIDO, beyond compare. A shame to take such a life."(Way of the Warrior, Way of Man:LW&C Vol 27)
"It is SHIDO for you to ATTACK. Think-What doe Ogami WANT? He wants REVENGE on the Yagyu! For four years he's lived in MEIFUMADO, enuring, sharpening his fangs. For VENGEANCE. He's shaken our very FOUNDATIONS. Driven us to the WALL! I've had to call the GRASS to Edo to destroy him. And what is the GRASS? It is the FOUNDATION that supports the Yagyu. More Important even than I. How many generations has it taken to plant you across the nation...? Truly you ARE the Yagyu. You are EVERYTHING. No wound could hurt us more than the uprooting of the Grass. How many YEARS will it take to replant you? So many......It was Ogami Itto who forced me to this point. And it is Ogami Itto we must DEFEAT, at ANY cost to rebuild our future. GRIEF. Is this what that word means...? You and I are ONE. If you attack, Itto will call it SHIDO. It's what he most DESIRES. He can KILL me, but while you remain, the Yagyu will survive. Bury us BOTH, and we perish forever. Kill ITTO! WHATEVER it takes! UNDERSTAND?!"(Way of the Warrior, Way of Man:LW&C Vol 27)
"And the father and son were there. It was a GIFT...The WAY of MANKIND, visited for a fleeting moment upon a father and son trapped in MEIFUMADO, a land beyond hope."(Way of the Warrior, Way of Man:LW&C Vol 27)
"And then they were gone. And the father and son were still there. The way of mankind grew distant. Father and son, they stood again in MEIFUMADO...The way of the warrior."(Way of the Warrior, Way of Man:LW&C Vol 27)
"Be ready, Daigoro. Here comes the dawn..."(Battle's Eve:LW&C Vol 27)
"Grasses fated to never flower, packing their bodies with explosives, blooming like crimson fireworks about the roiled waters...None but the Grass. Doomed to leave no flowers..."(Grass That Never Flowers:LW&C Vol 27)

"Break the formation HARVEST the last of the Grass. Then only RETSUDO remains. DAIGORO! This battle decides it all!"(Corpse Tree:LW&C Vol 28)
"The lay of the land may tilt a battle, but heaven alone decides the victor. Never was it truer than on this day. Their fate on this battlefield......Only heaven knew. But rejecting heaven...Spuning the high ground...They stood in MEIFUMADO depending on themselves alone. THEY DID NOT KNOW that this heaven-thrust blade...Now concealed a SUBTLE WEAKNESS hammered in by Hachibe the sword polisher. THEY DID NOT KNOW...That the Grass struck with iron-bound scabbards to STRESS that weakness. GOZU-MENZU! Not even the DEMONS of MEIFUMADO could know."(Corpse Tree:LW&C Vol 28)
"A NINJA'S life...Like these SEEDS. Hard. Plain. We die at our master's whim. And thus we make rosaries from the seeds of the CORPSE TREE. The corpse tree...say some, the BUDHI TREE of the sutras. Beneath that tree, the Buddha achieved enlightenment. How better to pray for our souls? And for the souls of you and your son...So let us pray. WARRIOR'S Way. SHINOBI'S way. Why do we fight, HUMANS all? The Grass withers. Your life drains away. PRAY. Accept the rosary of the GRASS. Rosary...of the CORPSE TREE..."(Corpse Tree:LW&C Vol 28)
Itto:"Daigoro...Where do rivers go?"
Itto:"That's right. The river flows into the ocean, and turns into waves. Waves, surging and receding without end. Our lives are like the waves. We live, we die, we are reborn. Soon your father's body will be a silent corpse. But, like the waves, my LIFE will not end. Like the waves, your father will travel to the shore of the next life. His body may die, but his life is ETERNAL. Yours too, Daigoro. Our lives are indestructible. IMMORTAL! Though waves break and blood flies, never SHRINK. Though my body falls, never QUAIL. Though my eyes shut, my lips close...Do not FEAR. In that world of rebirth, I'm STILL your FATHER. In that world and ALL worlds, you're my SON! We are FATHER and CHILD! FOREVER!"(Flute and Wave:LW&C Vol 28)
"But your father's body can't fall YET. The Grass has withered...BUT A YAGYU REMAINS! Come, RETSUDO! So long as these limbs move and my eyes see......Until my final DROP of BLOOD falls, this battle SHALL NOT END!"(Flute and Wave:LW&C Vol 28)
"The Grass is cut. It's time to fell the Yagyu tree."(Flute and Wave:LW&C Vol 28)
Retsudo:"You've drunk deep of my clan's blood. Your fine DOTANUKI is broken. And now...That wound. You and your son will not see the dawn. Accept this."
Itto:"Your clan reigned throughout Japan, and now see what's left. The trunk withers without it's roots. I can topple it with my dying breath."
Retsudo:"Take a sword from the one of the GRASS, Itto."
Itto:"The Grass cannot rest in peace if I cut down the tree with their own sword."
Retsudo:"A foolish compassion. But either way, your life ends. I'll say no more."(Flute and Wave:LW&C Vol 28)
Retsudo:"ITTO! I'm not long for this world, but I have things to DO! I must REPLANT the tree you UPROOTED! The PILLAR of the TOKUGAWA! Until THEN, I can't give you this LIFE! Go on ahead, and save me a place on the Lotus Throne! We'll settle this THERE!"
Itto:"No, RETSUDO! You save a place for ME!"(Lotus Throne:LW&C Vol 28)
"BRILLIANT acting...Even I thought you were dead. But Daigoro's EYES did not. They did not BELIEVE in your DEATH. 'The Wisdom of a child', they say. How IRONIC! The Gods want YOUR life more then MINE...Such is heaven's WILL!"(Arms:LW&C Vol 28)
"Grandson...Of my heart......."(Arms:LW&C Vol 28)

"The first sound is like a key to the door that separates my inner world from the world outside, and I have never known that key to turn smoothly in its lock. Most people, thanks to their easy command of words, can keep this door between the inner world and the outer world wide open, so that the air passes freely between the two; but for me this has been quite impossible. Thick rust has gathered on the key."(The Temple of the Golden Pavilion)
"I changed my angle of vision a few times and bent my head in various directions. But the temple aroused no emotion within me. It was merely a small, dark, old, three-storied building. The phoenix on top of the roof looked like a crow that had alighted there for a rest. Not only did the building fail to strike me as beautiful, but I even had a sense of disharmony and restlessness. Could beauty, I wonder, be as unbeautiful a thing as this?"(The Temple of the Golden Pavilion)

"The muffled thunder of dialogue comes through the walls, then a chorus of laughter. Then more thunder. Most of the laugh tracks on television were recorded in the early 1950s. These days, most of the people you hear laughing are dead."
"God has matured. He is not the impulsive, bowelless being of the Testaments - the vehement glorymonger, with His bag of cheap carny tricks and his booming voice - the fiery huckster with his burning bushes and his wonder wands. Nowadays God knows what He wants and He knows who He wants."

"May 2: The angel lay in a little thicket. It had no need of love; there was nothing anywhere in the world could startle it - we can lie here with the angel if we like; it couldn't have hurt much when they slit its throat."

"He'd never shot a woman before. He'd shot men, plenty of them. Shot them, bludgeoned them, garroted them, poisoned them, he'd even pushed some poor slob out of a 747 as he crapped in his pants and pleaded for his life. But he'd never shot a woman before. No, wait a minute. He had shot a woman before. There was that dance therapist in Fort Lauderdale. He'd filled her with so much lead you could have sharpened her head and done a crossword puzzle with her. He'd shot women before but never one as beautiful as this. He'd never shot a beautiful woman before, that's it."

"Yet how strange a thing is the beauty of music! The brief beauty that the player brings into being transforms a given period of time into pure continuance; it is certain never to be repeated; like the existence of dayflies and other short-lived creatures, beauty is a perfect abstraction and creation of life itself. Nothing is so similar to life as music; yet, although the Golden Temple shared the same type of beauty, nothing could have been farther from the world and more scornful of it than the beauty of the building."(Temple of the Golden Pavilion)
