Someone suggested I purchase this on a "blind buy"

It sounded like a good idea until I saw the price.

7 Seasons (only 5 discs a season) ...

...and the first set is seems to be $70+ a season (even on EBAY!) for a series in which I have never viewed a single episode

Opinions on this show?

It was British no-budget SF; I've only seen bits of episodes. It was very popular with the Dr. Who fanatics. If you like TV shows in the style of Dr. Who, Tripods, etc. you might like it.

I'd try to borrow a season from that someone first, though.

B7 is one of my all-time favorites.
Maybe more than Doctor Who (And that's saying something, as I love the Doctor!).
It is paranoid, has great writing (for the most part, there are some utter shiite episodes), the acting is spot on, great guest stars, and the usual BBC budget for special effects.
$70 seems a bit pricey for the first season.
I think you could pick it up from a UK retailer for less than $40 US.
There are only 4 seasons, BTW.
I have been anxiously awaiting these on R1 DVD for quite some time, in hopes that they would pump up the extras for the US market.
Still haven't broken down and gotten the R2s, which do have some special features, though.

This was one of the first sci-fi things I ever watched, along with Dr Who and Star Wars. Written by Terry Nation, with good ideas marred by low budget effects (I still remember an episode of Blue Peter, a children's TV show, showing you how to make a Blake 7 communicator bracelet from an old sellotape reel.)

Got one of the most downbeat endings as well.

Good show, I like it. Like most British TV at the time it was primarily shot on videotape (apart from the exteriors), so you have to like that to begin with. Some pics here to wet your appetite.

It was a cool series. More sophisitcated and 'adult' than Dr.Who with $2 FX and shot on video. The price for the boxset is a total ripoff I reckon. Get the UFO one instead!
