Henry:Portrait of a Serial Killer

I like 'em both but I voted for "Maniac".

Without thinking twice; MANIAC!

Yes, MANIAC, without a doubt. Spinell is too great.

Spinell is too great.
It really was an excellent performance.

Absolutely love MANIAC and Spinell's performance! The gore is definitely better than HENRY,but as a whole I think HENRY'S a better film. Tom Towles is so memorable.

HENRY is much more effective, but I think MANIAC is a much more watchable and "enjoyable" film, so I voted for that one.

Why Maniac of course I always felt Henry was overrated

Henry for sure.

I like them both, but because of Spinells creepy and real performance it's gotta be Maniac for me.

I'm going with Maniac.

HENRY. I felt MANIAC was a bit overrated, sure it was gritty and violent and Spinnell did a fine job. But it still always felt kind of "blah" to me. I feel Lustig's real gift is being a distributor, spokesperson and restorerer of cult cinema, rather than a director.

MANIAC, definitely. It's scary, gritty and realistic (apart from Munro falling for Spinell) whereas I find HPOASK badly acted, too constructed and forced "let's make it documentary-like", basically it's cheap and overrated. TV in the head ?! Come on, that's cheap. Tracy Arnold was good, but Rooker went on to better things.

Can't decide, this one's too close for me. Each films' respective strengths & weaknesses kinda balance them out against each other.
Maybe a double feature viewing tonite will help me make up my mind!

HENRY is a masterpiece. Michael Rooker gives one of the best performances of the 1980s.
I can't stand MANIAC. I think it's an awful film, and that final big decapitation is one of the worst make-up effects in the history of film.

MANIAC - Joe Spinells performance is terrific and Tom Savinis make-up is amazing - the ending still manages to creep me out, and this is an all time fave.

and Tom Savinis make-up is amazing
Agreed. The shotgun/exploding head sequence never ceases to amaze me. Excellent stuff.

I like both films a lot but my vote goes to MANIAC. Its easily one of the best things to come out of the 80s. Spinell's performance is just so great! Plus, I saw it at quite a young age (10-11 I think) and it REALLY scared me so it has some sentimental value. I also saw Scavolini's NIGHTMARE around the same time and it disturbed me too. Its cool having parents that would let me rent such mind-warping stuff at such a young age
