I was watching the supplements from The Revolver DVD and they spoke of the above film from 1972 and how it was never released and how there was a huge clash of opinion on it between Sollima and the producers.
Does anyone know more about this film?

Funnily enough, I just started to watch this, I have not seen all of it yet. My copy is a DVDr from VSOM. I think the print may have been taken from Italian TV, with English subtitles added by VSOM. I'll post again after I have seen all of it.

Having finally seen all of the film, it is an accomplished mystery. The plot is about a man apparently shot to death by his young son, his wife at the sight of this goes insane and regresses into childhood. The woman's ex lover, who has recently returned to Italy, tries to solve the mystery of the killing. An elegant giallo on the themes of love, honesty and morality. There is no black gloved assassin here. instead there is a languid mystery with an intricate flashback structure, that is superbly scored, beautifully shot and excellently played. The final twist that reveals the killer's true identity is perhaps unsurprising. Nevertheless, the film confirms Sollima as one of the best of the 60s/70s CineCitta genre directors. I have a spare DVDR of the film, in case anybody is interested in a trade.
