Anybody watch this show? I rented the first volume of Season 1, and watched the first 3 episodes so far....not exactly great, but it wasn't horrible either. Does the show get better as it moves along, or stay the same?

I watched the 1st season on Showtime. I thought the 1st episode was great but then the episodes kinda lag until the halfway point of the season, then it starts to pick up steam again and the last third of the shows are really good. I ended up really liking this show and am looking forward to the start of the 2nd season next month, even though my favorite character, Marina, won't be back. I was surprised by the number of 80's female stars who showed up on this show, e.g., Rosanna Arquette, Lolita Davidovich, Kelly Lynch(wait till u see her!), and Anne Archer.

Hmmm i've watched the first 4 episodes so far, and for some reason I enjoyed the odd numbered episodes and thought the even number ones were just so-so. The main problem I have with the show is that it got way too dramatic early on, and never really gave you a chance to care for the characters before plunging into everything. I was fairly entertained though, so i'll probably check out the next volume to see if that's any good.

I was not taken in by the show either and at least from the episodes I watched(the first 5 or so). I just could'nt get into it,nor care about any of the charecters. It all seems rather safe and prudish for such a 'daring' 'groundbreaking' show which is even more surprising. I think Rudy pointed out a major flaw in the begining of the show, which also took me out of it.
If it did get better durring the later half of the season, that is great. Maybe I will give it another chance, but am not holding out any hope though. I did catch bits of the later episodes and it seemed like 'more of the same' too myself, but who knows. I did like Marina,so that sucks if she is not returning.
So far Queer As Folk is still the better show in my honest opinion. It had a rocky start itself(though was entertaining at least),then got better near the end of the first season when more substance and less flash was concentrated into the plots. Then it had a horrible(well not horrible, just inconsistent) second season(bad writers who never watched previous episodes,so it was all over the place),then got back on track with season three. That I am awaiting the next season of,meanwhile I am not all that into The L Word.

I hated the subplot with Pam Grier's character working for 'Slim Daddy'. I can't figure out why they got rid of Marina, I thought she was the hottest one on there. The 2nd season starts this month.

I thought Marnia was hot as well + could act;)
No Marinia=no viewing
..though I may catch bits and pieces for curiosity,if at all.

I think Jennifer Beals is the only cast member that hasn't been shown nude. I'm hoping next season will remedy that.

I'm just waiting for some realistic "L Word" women. I mean Hollywood isn't all about reality, but c'mon! Where are the big women on motorcycles? Enough of the Gap Creatures, OK? Let's see some Patsy Cline types!

What is the point of those random flashbacks shown at the beginning of various episodes? And why must every episode end with Mia Kirshner's character? Is she supposed to be the epicenter of the series or something?

Did you catch Kelly Lynch as 'Ivan'? I didn't even recognize her.

The flashbacks have something to do with each episode. I think in the 1st season Kirshner's character was supposed to be the viewer's stand in. I also read that her experiences are based on the experiences of the series creator, when she first moved to LA.

Oh my God, I seriously hope Mia Kirshner's character dies or finds some other way to leave the show completely. I can't stand her at all. She can't act worth shit, and her character is waaaay too damn melodramatic for her own good. Yes she's been through a lot so far in the show, but I really despise her character. She just gets on my nerves so much. On every episode she acts like a freakin 16 year old stoner too. That woman needs some damn acting lessons, and the writers need to make her character a lot less annoying for the show to really succeed.

I just finished the first season and while it did start to get pretty good near the end, I had a hard time with the fact that so many new major subplots were introduced right around the last few episodes. Still looking forward to Season 2 though, and hopefully it'll only be uphill from there.

I caught the behind the scenes/preview of Season 2. Looks like there's gonna be a few guest stars, e.g., Melissa Rivers, Arianna Huffington, and Sandra Bernhardt plays one of Jenny's(Mia Kirshner) new professors. I also saw that tall blonde from Best in Show.
In an interview, Kirshner described the reaction to her character as 'polarizing'. I guess that's a good way to say most people couldn't stand her character. I think they get rid of Marina's character thru suicide and Pam Grier takes over her cafe.

when does season 2 start?

Anybody catch the season premiere? I'm downloading it right now

It sucked. They seem to be dropping a lot of characters. The way they handled Marina's(a Contessa?) suicide attempt was pretty lame. It was made even suckier because it came on after THE best episode of Carnivale I've seen so far.

Yeah, I thought it was ok. More of the same old. Everything seems a lot softer for some reason, like Shane all of a sudden just seeming like the nice quiet lesbian instead of the bad boy that she was in Season 1. I don't know, I'll probably watch the next few episodes just because I'm bored but if it doesn't get any better than i'll probably find something else to watch. Do you know how much time has passed since the finale of Season 1? And didn't Bette (or Tina, i'm bad with names) have a miscarriage.......so how is she pregnant all of a sudden?
02-23-2005, 06:23 PM
Judging by the size of Tina's stomach, its been 4-5 months. She did have a miscarriage last season, but I think that the actress got knocked up in real life and they decided to write it into the show. I think the explanation was that she got artificially inseminated without Bette knowing it so she could surprise her but then she caught her and they broke up. It's so preposterous that she's going to hide it, it's so easy to tell just by looking at the weight that she gained in her face alone. That girl that Shane was going down on was smokin' hot. They've already announced a 3rd season.

Good God, what is up with that new theme song? It's like the worst shit i've ever heard in my life, seriously. I actually kind of digged the old one. The new one makes this seem like a show on the Lifetime network or something. But yeah, this show is starting to suck so I might just stop watching if I get too bored of it.
03-02-2005, 02:33 AM
Wow the show really sounds like it's not going anywhere expect down(& not in a good way;)).
I wonder who watches it? Are the ratings good enough to already announce a third season?
I think I will just skip this show from now on,and wait for the final season of Queer as Folk to begin instead. Even in it's more lackluster episodes,it was still more entertaining than any of the episodes I have seen of The L Word(which really put me too sleep).
03-02-2005, 10:35 AM
Yeah, the new theme song is god awful. Ugh. The old opening was much better. I did think the 2nd episode was better than the 1st. The scene with Dana and her parents was pretty intense and the scene in the strip club was good. The Dana/Alice storyline is getting more interesting. One question, where did the sex go? Last season you were at least guaranteed one hot scene per episode and so far this season there hasn't been any. :(
