Can anyone comment on whether or not it is worth upgrading from the previous R1 release to the new Anniversary Deluxe Edition?

It has a much improved transfer, a new (and better) audio commentary, a decent stills gallery, some well written liner notes in booklet form, and some really good interviews with Wang Yu. Expect a review soon, but in short, seeing as this is a true favorite of mine, I'd say it is worth the upgrade.

Thanks for the info! It will be mine. Now to dump my first copy...

It has a much improved transfer.
Yeah, nice of them to fuck that up the first time.

First I heard of it - the dvd that came out (last year?) is in my all time favorites collection - when is the new improved version coming out?

I came out yesterday. I picked it up and Ian is right about the picture being better. The print is still pretty rough, but the transfer is better. More detail and less grain.

I still haven't seen the disc(I'm waiting for mine with some other stuff), but glad you liked the liners. If my pieces there seemed short or cut (I hope not too bad), they were shortened for room. The piece on The Flying Guillotine was cut by about 50%. And the piece on Wang Yu was cut by 50%, then cut again to 75% less than what I originally had at the VERY last minute. Expect to see the full pieces in print sometime in the near future somewhere. As for the print/film, this will be the last time that First Films will be able to use their print. After this mastering job, the film is falling apart for real. Oh, and this is actually the start of a Pathfinder "Jimmy Wang Yu Collection." Expect the insane Knight Errant starring Jimmy taking on a killer grandma (!) and Kurata to be winging your way in a few months. And if all goes right, two or three more releases after that before the end of 2005. :)

The more Wang Yu, the better. I love that crazy guy.
