Quiet, minimal remake of Ozu's own Story of Floating Weeds with good use of color. Ganjiro Nakamura is very good as the main character and Ayako Wakao and Machiko Kyo are also good in their roles. A film that shares some similarities with the Floating Weeds story is Ingmar Bergman's Sawdust and Tinsel, but not as sentelmental or forgiving towards its characters.

I've been resisting posted a reply because I don't really have anything of substance to say.
But I do have to add that the remake of "Floating Weeds" that Al writes about is one of the most exquisite films ever made. I can't think of another film in which the delicacy, the humor, the richness of the characters are so perfectly realized.
