Terrific, moody early 40s film noir with good chemistry between Ladd and Lake. A film that I feel would be influential to Jean Pierre Melville's Le Samourai, especially the prototype for Alain Delon's character. One of the first of the hitman portrait films. In turn, Le Samourai would be an influence on John Woo's The Killer.

I also like Robert Preston's performance who is very sympathetic in his role. He makes for a good counterpoint to Ladd.
Saw this in a theater. Very entertaining. Bits of it have not exactly aged well: Lake's dance numbers for one. The audience was in tears of laughter at the end what with all the over-the-top wartime propaganda and Lake's final line: "Hold me!"
