INVITATION TO HELL

Jacky is invited to a fancy-dress party at the farm manor home of her friend Laura. Soon finding herself enravelled in a sinsiter plot to sacrifice her virginity to help banish a supreme evil presence from the area, she is drugged and finds herself the centrepiece of a dark ritual…

The next morning, with claw-like scratch marks on her hips and hazy about what happened the night before, her attempts to separate reality from sleeping nightmare lead her to confront her friend in order to figure out what exactly has happened. The revelations shock Jacky to the core and she decides to leave as soon as possible to save herself from certain death. But she is blocked at every turn by the evil s all-encompassing force, violently murdered bodies turning up whichever way she turns…

Pitchforking, throat-stabbing, heart-ripping, head-squashing entertainment!

CAST: Becky Simpson (“Jacky”), Joseph Sheahan (“Ed”), Colin Efford (“Maurice”), Steve Longhurst (“Alan”), Russell Hall (“Rick”), Catherine Rowlands (“Laura”), Tina Barnett (“Liz”)
MUSIC: Terence Mills PRODUCTION DESIGN: Joyce Bernard PRODUCTION DESIGN ASSISTANT: Elizabeth Morris SCREENPLAY: Carl Humphrey PHOTOGRAPHY: Stephen Childs EDITOR: Mike John SOUND: Tony Ward PRODUCER: Caroline Aylward DIRECTOR: Michael J. Murphy. Filmed on 16mm

THE LAST NIGHT

Two psychos escape from the maximum security wing of Broadmoor Prison and sneak in the backdoor of a theatre to hide away while a performance of a stage play titled Murder in the Dark stages its final night. As the play unfolds to a riveted audience the two dangerous degenerates set about intimidating, torturing, sexually assaulting and murdering their way through the theatre troupe…

The murderous activity of the duo is intercut with the stage performance, providing a juxtaposition of real life murder taking place with the staged killing unravelling in the play before an absorbed audience. This concept will become even more apparent and connected to the play as the film progresses, eventually blurring the line between what is real and what is staged”!

Impaling, strangulation, hanging, stabbing, sexual assault, implied necrophilia, shooting… All in the name of entertainment!

CAST: Steve Longhurst (‘Mike’), Catherine Rowlands (‘Helen’), David Bruhl (‘Trevor’), Colin Efford (‘Gary ), Antony Peyton (‘Arthur’), Lindsey Greer (‘Sue’), Yvette Gunter (‘Eileen’), Patricia Dolby (‘Marilyn’), Marina Bolton (‘Jill ), Clifford Gardiner (‘Dave’), Al Greer (‘Bert’), Peter Neal (‘Stan’), Tim Morris (‘Clive’), Nanda Adkin ( Rita’)

TECHNICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THIS DVD RELEASE

“INVITATION TO HELL is sourced from the only source available, a 3/4″ U-Matic master tape that had been stored in director Michael J. Murphy’s attic for decades, not having seen daylight since 1982! Various visual anomalies were inherent in the tape as a result of its storage, static lines and other minor wear apparent on first viewing when assessing the master elements. After a clean-up process conducted personally by the director to remove problematic wear and polish up the source, an anamorphic transfer was created by the director to match his preferred visual intentions for the double-bill. Never available in a letterboxed format due to the limitations of the video format in its early days, the film was released in a fullscreen version that was open-matte rather than cropped. Allowing viewers of the time the opportunity to see the films in more revealing form, the director’s original intended 1.77:1 1.85:1 approximated theatrical framing has never been appreciated. Here then is your chance to own and view the original, never-before-seen complete and uncut version for the first time ever in its original intended theatrical ratio! Even British viewers who recall the film from its early-1980s video incarnation just at the start of the ‘Video Nasties’ scandal will be in for a treat as never before has this ultra-rare and obscure British indie horror looked this good or been this complete! Cut by 39 seconds for its latter-day video re-release in 1986, the original 1983 pre-cert video release has always been thought to be uncut. This is not the case however, as the film suffered cuts to a graphic moment of Fulci-style gore that will be seen here in this release for the first time anywhere in the world!

“THE LAST NIGHT” proved a little more problematic. Shot at non-standard speed of 16 and 2/3fps as a cost-cutting measure against the standard 24 or 25fps, the film suffers from a slight visual stutter in movement. The master tape used was of a lesser quality than the U-Matic source for “INVITATION TO HELL”, with softer image and other issues. Whereas the old pre-cert video was grainy, overly-dark, and generally poor quality, the source used to master this support film was a soft yet solid quality typical of VHS but benefitted from stronger colours, more audio clarity and a brighter transfer. Due to the nature of this DVD release and the budget restrictions inherent in putting together this debut disc, creating a brand new 1″ master was unfortunately not an option. However, the video source used for THE LAST NIGHT has been given a polish by the director himself to enhance the quality within the limits of the source for your viewing pleasure!

Not only does this DVD Special Edition represent the first time this double-bill has ever been available uncut and complete anywhere in the world, it is the first time this double-bill has ever been seen outside of the United Kingdom. Only INVITATION TO HELL has enjoyed a limited video release in North America, via small VHS release and bootleg DVD (duped from the old cut, poor quality VHS release). This is the first time ever that International cult-film fans will be able to enjoy these films as they were originally produced and intended: as a double-bill!

A quarter of a century after it’s first limited release the film celebrates its 25th Anniversary with an Ultra-Limited Special Edition DVD, available in only 1,000 numbered units worldwide. The first numbered 50 pre-ordered copies will be personally signed by the director, Michael J. Murphy, with a special ‘number 666′ DVD signed by the director as well as containing various specs specific to that particular numbered disc (this particular numbered and signed DVD for auction on Ebay only!).

SYNOPSIS

Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O’Connell in an epic adventure that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Along with his son Alex (Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother Jonathan (John Hannah), he must stop a mummy awakened from a 2,000-year-old curse from enslaving the world.  Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor (Jet Li) and his 10,000 warriors have lain forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. When dashing adventurer Alex O’Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, he turns to the only people he can think of with the skill and knowledge to combat the undead: his parents. But the Emperor’s quest for world domination has only intensified during his imprisonment and, with unimaginable supernatural powers and a legion of Terra Cotta Warriors at his command, the Emperor Mummy could be an unstoppable force—unless the O’Connells can vanquish him first.

Behind-the-Scenes Bonus Features and Filmmaker Interviews Reveal the Real Passions and Secrets of the Life of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire Available December 28, 2008

HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. – A young noblewoman marries into one of Britain’s most powerful families and becomes the toast of London in The Duchess, arriving on DVD and Blu-ray fashionably timed for the new year and holiday entertainment on December 28th from Paramount Home Entertainment.  Keira Knightley (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, Pirates of the Caribbean), Ralph Fiennes (In Bruges, the Harry Potter series, The Constant Gardener) and Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!) star in the true story of the Duchess of Devonshire and “Empress of Fashion” who must face an agonizing choice between responsibility and love.  Captivating audiences and critics alike with its gripping and passionate tale of a young woman and direct ancestor to Princess Diana who became a fashion icon, a devoted mother, a voice for the common man and an unforgettable symbol of glamour for the ages, “The Duchess is feisty, cool, and scandalous” (Richard Schickle, Time).  Showcasing rich and in-depth special features, The Duchess will be available for the suggested retail priced of $19.99 U.S./$24.99 Canada on DVD and on Blu-ray for $29.99 U.S./$36.99 Canada.

One of history’s most beguiling leading ladies, Georgiana Spencer (Keira Knightley) was married at 17 to the wealthy and influential William Cavendish (Ralph Fiennes), the fifth Duke of Devonshire — and into a lavish world filled with shocking deceptions, decadent scandals and stifling demands of duty.   As Duchess of Devonshire, she first indulged her considerable energy in high society — outshining most of the aristocratic men around her with her incredible wit — only to become one of the most impassioned political voices in all of 18th century Britain.   Beloved by a nation but betrayed by her husband, Georgiana’s charisma, political savvy and distinct flair for  fashion would make her the “It Girl” of her era… but a chance for personal happiness would remain elusive until she dares to discover love on her own terms.

* (2005): Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role – Pride & Prejudice
** (1996): Best Actor in a Leading Role – The English Patient; (1993): Best Actor in a Supporting Role – Schindler’s List
